Arrested for Boy Orgies: Gay Teacher of the Year

Jared Anderson, 28, was recognized in January for excellence as an English teacher at Judson High School, but after being arrested by San Antonio police, he confessed to a variety of lewd group sex acts with about a dozen minor boys he had lured to his home from his local Mormon church.  Anderson is the third teacher in the Judson Independent School District (Converse, Texas) in the past two months to face child sex charges.

“If there's that many, there's always a possibility there could be more. These are disgusting, graphic acts that he’s been accused of doing, and we need to protect our children, and it’s best that we try to get as much information as we can so that we can make as strong a case as possible against this guy.”

San Antonio police say 28-year-old Jared Anderson was being held Thursday on charges of indecency with a child and two counts of sexual performance of a child.

Police say Anderson encouraged boys to engage in sexual activity with him and each other during several parties at his home. Anderson texted apologies to some parents amid the investigation.

A statement from the San Antonio Police Department said one of the parties involved the suspect hosting a "bros night" Feb. 12 at his house, which was attended by seven boys, ages 15 to 17. A sign at the door at the party read, "The last one to get naked has to get the first dare," the department said.

Police said on March 12 they started investigating parties Anderson hosted for 10 to 12 boys from his church over the past few months.

An arrest warrant richly detailed the vulgar, lewd games performed at Anderson's home. Amongst the challenges encouraged by Anderson, who submitted the most daring suggestions, included, having the teens touch each other, hug, wrestle, and hug him while disrobed.

“This all stems from a report that came in a few days ago where two victims presented themselves over at one of the substations and reported that this individual had hosted them for some parties at his house,” SAPD spokesman Sgt. Jesse Salame said.

Salame said the alleged victims told investigators that Anderson played games with numerous boys at those parties that involved sexual activity over the course of several months.

“Another incident involved suspect challenging a 17-year-old to see who can be the most obscene. It involved the suspect and the 17-year-old sending pictures of their genitals to each other [a.k.a. sexting]. The incident was reported last week to (a) church, and the church banned suspect from returning,” police said.

Maroney is accused of engaging in sex acts with the victim eight times and touching the minor sexually on at least two occasions.

Maroney also is accused in one incident of trying to strangle the victim. In another, the indictment says, Maroney cut the victim's tongue with a knife.

George County sheriff's Sgt. J.D. Savage said an investigation began in August after the victim came forward with the allegations.

Maroney is free on a total bond of $100,000.

If convicted of all the charges, Maroney could go to prison for life.

Patricia Hermann, 48, has been charged with sexual battery of a minor and aggravated sexual battery of a minor, according to Cobb County (Ga.) Police Sgt. Dana Pierce. The alleged abuse of two disabled girls happened on a trip to Georgia between late April and early May, authorities said.

Hermann is being held without bond at the Cook County Jail, according to Cook County sheriff’s spokeswoman Sophia Ansari. Her extradition status was not immediately known Tuesday morning.

Hermann is founder and CEO of Elite Stars, an athletic program for individuals with special needs based in northwest suburban Schaumburg, according to her biography on the Elite Stars website.

Cobb County Sheriff's Sgt. Dana Pierce said the offenses occurred between April 30 and May 3, when Hermann and members of the Elite Stars gymnastics team were staying at a Kennesaw, Georgia, hotel while taking part in a competition.

"When they returned home, the two female athletes separately told their parents that the head coach of Elite Stars, Patricia Hermann, physically and sexually abused them in a hotel room during the trip," Pierce said Monday.

A warrant issued Oct. 22 states that during interviews at the DuPage County [Illinois] Child Advocacy Center, the girls -- ages 13 and 10 -- described Hermann making physical contact with intimate parts of their bodies. Each claim was corroborated by another minor who was staying in the same room, according to the warrant.

Hermann was booked into the Cook County [Illinois] Jail on Monday after being arrested by Schaumburg police, said Sophia Ansari, a spokeswoman for the Cook County Sheriff's Office. She was being held without bond pending extradition to Georgia, Ansari said.

The alleged sexual abuse happened between late April and early May at a hotel in Kennesaw, which is outside Atlanta, Pierce said. Participants in the Elite Stars program had been in Georgia for a gymnastics competition, the sergeant said.

After they returned home, two girls in their early teens with cognitive disabilities told their parents separately that Hermann had abused them, Pierce said. Law enforcement agencies in Illinois helped with the investigation, Pierce said.

On Monday night, ABC7 spoke to the mother of one of the two alleged victims. The victim's mother was too upset to speak on camera. Her daughter, she says, went on a gymnastics trip to Georgia and came back extremely upset.

It's surprising news in her quiet Schaumburg neighborhood, where residents say several special needs families live.

"Yes, it's a surprise to everyone in the neighborhood, I think it's hard to believe," said Scott McIlvain, a neighbor.

Hermann was booked by Cook County authorities. She will likely be extradited to Georgia.

Cavalcoli was arrested and booked into the Broward County Jail. He was awaiting an appearance in federal court in Fort Lauderdale, where authorities say he will be officially charged with traveling across state lines to engage in illegal sexual activity with a minor.

[University of Michigan] spokeswoman Mary Masson said Cavalcoli has been a professor at the university for 13 years. He is an assistant professor of computational medicine and bioinformatics.

Authorities say Cavalcoli had made arrangements with an undercover FDLE agent who is assigned to the FBI Child Exploitation Task Force. Cavalcoli believed the agent was the boy's father, according to a federal complaint filed in the U.S. District Court's Southern District of Florida.

On Nov. 22, 2013, the agent conducted an undercover session on the Internet posing as a 55-year-old father with a son who was 13 in the southern Florida area.

The profile was posted on a social networking website that catered to men, a portion of which provided an area to discuss sexual fetishes, including child pornography and sexual activity with young boys.

[Since 2013, Agent Cannon] continued to correspond with Cavalcoli over the next 20 months, talking about social networking sites, child pornography and other topics involving the Internet, records show.

In July, "Jim" sent the federal agent an email saying he would be in Florida and asked if he and "Donnie" wanted to meet for a sexual encounter, according to court records.

[Cavalcoli] sent naked, sexually explicit photos to the undercover officer and the two communicated periodically for about 20 months.

In July, investigators said, "Jim" posted online that he would be making an annual trip to Central Florida in August and asked: "Any sons or Dads in that area want to meet up for fun?" He sent a separate email to the officer, asking if he and his son wanted to meet.

The officer wrote back, telling him he would have to use condoms and "no pain" if he had sex with the child. "Jim" replied that he would bring condoms and lubricant and wrote: "I'm glad you're looking out for your boy!"

They then arranged to meet at the Bonaventure Resort & Spa in Weston early Friday evening.

A Clover High School math teacher and coach had sex with a student and provided him with alcohol at the teacher’s home [near Lake Wylie on Valley Forge Drive] last summer, arrest warrants released Tuesday allege.

Landreth’s charge of sexual battery notes it was “without force or coercion,” meaning the sexual activity was consensual. South Carolina law states that sexual relations between a teacher and a student who is 16 or 17 is a felony regardless of consent, punishable by up to five years in prison.

Clover school officials were notified of the inappropriate relationship between Landreth and a student last week, schools spokesman Mychal Frost said. Officials immediately began an investigation and notified the York County Sheriff’s Office, he said.

The [school] district said all applicants for employee positions in the school district are subject to a South Carolina Law Enforcement Division background check, and a Central Registry of Child Abuse and Neglect check through the Department of Social Services.

It is against South Carolina law for a person “affiliated with a … school in an official capacity” to have sex with a student, even if the relationship is consensual. If the student is 16 or 17 years old, the crime is a felony and that person could face up to five years in prison.

Landreth graduated from Anderson University in December 2012 with a degree in mathematics secondary education, according to the Web page, which is no longer posted on the school’s site. Landreth started working at Clover High School after graduating from Anderson.

From "Scottsboro High School teacher resigns; accused of sexual misconduct with student" by Melissa Riopka, WHNT-TV19 (Huntsville, AL) 1/27/15

Scottsboro Police say 26-year-old Kandace Christopher was booked on two charges Monday.  Those charges are one felony count of a school employee engaging in a sex act with a student under the age of 19 and one misdemeanor count of a school employee having sexual contact with a student under 19.  Christopher’s bond was set at $16,000 and she was transferred to the Jackson County Jail.

Police followed up with a criminal investigation, and determined a relationship took place between the [female] student and the teacher, Christopher, for the past three months.  According to Scottsboro High School’s website, Christopher was a world history teacher as well as a softball and basketball coach.

“Responding officers learned that the juvenile ran away after being confronted by her parents about a relationship between the juvenile and a teacher/coach from school,” [Scottsboro Police Lt. Erik] Dohring said. “The juvenile was located several hours later and returned to her parents.”

The Scottsboro Police Department Detective Unit followed up with a criminal investigation following this allegation of an inappropriate relationship between the student and her teacher. Dohring said the investigation revealed that the relationship did occur involving the student and history teacher Kandace Marie Christopher, 26 of Fort Payne, over the past three months. Christopher also served as a junior high basketball coach and assistant varsity softball coach.

On Monday, at 11:55 a.m., officers arrested Christopher and charged her with school employee engaging in a sex act or deviant sexual intercourse with a student under the age of 19 (Class B felony) and school employee having sexual contact with a student under the age of 19 (Class A misdemeanor). Christopher was transported to the Scottsboro City Jail and was transferred to the Jackson County Jail. She was released on $16,000 bond at 4:36 p.m. Monday. Per Judge Don Word, the bond holds the condition that Christopher makes no contact with the juvenile victim.

Jail records confirm that Christopher posted bond and has been released.

Detectives from the sex crimes unit of the Portland Police Bureau brought Bean, 66, to the Multnomah County Detention Center on Wednesday.

He is expected to be arraigned later in Lane County Circuit Court in connection with a 2013 incident involving a 15-year-old boy. Charges are expected to include two counts of third-degree sodomy, which is a felony, and one count of third-degree sex abuse, a misdemeanor.

He also has raised money for President Barack Obama and other Democrats, including Bill Clinton and Al Gore. He is an at-large member of the Democratic National Committee.

He helped found two major national political groups, the Human Rights Campaign and the Gay and Lesbian Victory Fund, and has been a major contributor for several Democratic presidential candidates, including Barack Obama. He's also a close friend of former Gov. Barbara Roberts.

Bean's Flickr account shows him talking with Obama at several events, posing with first lady Michelle Obama and numerous other political figures, including former President Bill Clinton.  A blog post from his sister, Sue Surdam Bean, detailed her brother's work on a July 24, 2012 Obama fundraiser in Portland.  She included three photos of Terry Bean's ride on Air Force One with Obama to a subsequent event in Seattle.

The arrest comes after a six-month investigation that began with allegations Bean secretly made video recordings of men having sex in his bedroom. As WW reported in June, Bean accused a former lover, Kiah Lawson [age 25], of attempting to extort him over the discovery of a hidden camera. In the spring, Bean sought to keep the allegations secret and tried to reach a $40,000 settlement with Lawson.

After WW began asking questions, Bean went to the police asking them to investigate his allegations. Bean also handed over to police what he said was evidence of additional illegal activity by Lawson and others.

Lawson told WW that early this year he had discovered a hidden camera in a smoke detector above Bean's bed. Lawson claimed he was in more than one video that was made without his knowledge, and that video recording also captured at least a half dozen men “in a state of nudity engaged in intimate acts with [Bean].”

James Chatham faces child molestation charges after multiple students came forward with allegations.

The mother, who did not want to be identified, told 10News her son was one of three male students that were allegedly molested by the former drama teacher.

She said her son came forward in February, telling her that Chatham touched his private parts and tried to kiss him in the classroom last school year.

On Monday, Chatham was arraigned on three counts of misdemeanor child molestation involving a male student. Court records show the alleged incident happened three times between September 2013 and April 2014. While these charges are linked to another young man, the woman told 10News her son will testify about how the teacher preyed on them.

[A decade earlier . . .] A drama teacher at Granite Hills High School has been removed from the classroom following his arrest Monday on charges he molested a 17-year-old boy.

Robert Paul Beus, 30, is in jail in lieu of $75,000 bail, the Sheriff's Department said. He is accused of sodomy, sex with a foreign object and oral copulation with a minor.

Grossmont Union High School District spokesman Mark Pettis said Beus was immediately put on leave when the district was informed of the charges.

Beus had been teaching at Granite Hills since the beginning of the school year, Pettis said. He had passed all required law enforcement background checks that determine whether someone has criminal convictions.

Kirkland police said the man dropped off his computer be repaired at a Kirkland repair center. A computer technician found what they believed to be photos of child pornography on the computer’s hard drive.

Police identified the suspect as Kurtis Kasner, who is a substitute teacher for the Northshore School District.

Kasner was arrested in the 19400 block of 194th Avenue in Woodinville before 4 p.m.

The man teaches elementary-aged children in the Northshore School District, which covers portions of north King County and south Snohomish County, including Bothell. He told police that, even through a 45-year teaching career, he’d been fascinated with child porn his whole life.

The man told police he would never touch or take photos of a child – he only “used his imagination,” reports say -  but sought pornographic images of 10- to 15-year-old children by entering “incest” into a search engine, Kirkland police records say.

The man also admitted that he has “always been fascinated by images of children,” adding that he thought it was a “victimless crime” because there were “no real people involved,” according to reports.

Furthermore, he confessed that in 1976 he touched the genitals of a sleeping 15-year-old boy he was mentoring as part of the Big Brothers Big Sisters program. He also added that around 1979, a boy between ages 11 and 15 “came on to him” and he allowed the boy to sexually gratify him. He said he was “pretty sure” that was the last time he touched a child.

Kurtis Kasner was ordered held on $500,000 bail on Thursday and is expected to be formally charged on Monday with possession of depictions of minors engaged in sexually explicit conduct, Dan Donohoe, a spokesman for King County Prosecutor Dan Satterberg, said Friday.

. . . a letter was sent home Friday to parents to inform families of Kasner’s arrest and provide police contact information for any parent who believes a child may have had questionable or concerning interactions with Kasner.

According to police, Kasner said he has been looking at images of children all his life and has “always been fascinated” by the images, which he found online by entering “incest” into a search engine, the statement says.

“Kasner stated that he knew it was illegal to view and possess child pornography, but he believed that it was overkill. He stated that the law is there mainly to protect the children that images were taken of, but what is done is done,” the statement says.

The teacher is also the self-published author of a science fiction-fantasy series titled “Through a Hole in the Universe.” The story depicts three boys who discover a mysterious portal in a tree leading to another world.

The story was published in 1999, but its manuscript was drafted as far back as 1969 when he taught at Newcomb Elementary School in Long Beach, California, according to a cached profile on Kasner published by the Woodinville Weekly.

He retired before moving to Washington state where he passed a background check and worked at least 100 to 120 hours a year in classrooms for third to sixth-grade students . . .

Kaplan says criminal law should be changed so that pedophiles are only stigmatized or denied jobs if law school graduates agree that they pose a “direct threat” to children.

In the 1970s, the Catholic Church accepted the advice of many experts in the new mental-health industry, and concluded that pedophile priests could be successfully treated with private therapy. The theory was not proven correct, and it helped protect many priests as they sexually abused thousands of boys.

They must hide their disorder from everyone they know — or risk losing educational and job opportunities, and face the prospect of harassment and even violence. Many feel isolated; some contemplate suicide.

While treatment cannot eliminate a pedophile’s sexual interests, a combination of cognitive-behavioral therapy and medication can help him to manage urges and avoid committing crimes.

The Americans With Disabilities Act of 1990 and Section 504 of the Rehabilitation Act of 1973 prohibit discrimination against otherwise qualified individuals with mental disabilities, in areas such as employment, education and medical care. Congress, however, explicitly excluded pedophilia from protection under these two crucial laws.

It’s time to revisit these categorical exclusions. . . .

A pedophile should be held responsible for his conduct — but not for the underlying attraction.

Reached by telephone, Eli Rogers, the assistant principal of Meridian, said Aptakisic-Tripp School District 102 sent a note to parents this morning notifying them of the arrest and providing an anonymous tip line to call with any information.

Vastis, a resident of far northwest suburban Lakemoor who is also known as "Pete," faces a minimum of 15 years in prison if convicted of the most serious charge of manufacturing child pornography.

The youth, identified in the charges only as "Minor A," told agents that he began communicating via Skype and text messages with an adult he identified as "Pete" in September 2013 when he was 16. Agents later identified Pete as Vastis, the charges alleged.

Vastis was also charged with receiving a video containing child pornography on July 13.

Lakemoor police arrested John C. Vastis, 51, in the early morning hours of Thursday, charging him with two counts of producing child pornography and one count of receiving child pornography. According to a press release from the U.S. Attorney’s Office’s Chicago district, Vastis coerced a then 16-year-old boy to take sexually explicit photos of himself and send them to Vastis.

According to the release, law enforcement agencies had already been investigating the now 17-year-old male for producing and receiving child pornography himself.

On Thursday afternoon, District 102 Superintendent Theresa Dunkin said the arrest made for a distressing start to the year.

She said Vastis has been placed on investigatory leave; whether he will be paid during that leave will be settled by the School Board. Those discussions will be held in private, Board President Ellyn Ross said.

Judge Says Incest OK; It's the New Gay

As judges force same-sex "marriage" down the throats of Americans, it comes as no surprise for a judge to say that society needs to accept men having sex with their sisters, or for that matter, men having sex with children.

He also said the “only reason” that incest is still a crime is because of the high risk of genetic abnormalities in children born from consanguineous relationships “but even that falls away to an extent [because] there is such ease of contraception and readily access to abortion.”

“If this was the 50s and you had a jury of 12 men there, which is what you’d invariably have, they would say it’s unnatural for a man to be interested in another man or a man being interested in a boy. Those things have gone.”

Reported on Friday, Judge Neilson’s comment on incest becoming socially acceptable is being investigated.

Attorney-general for NSW, Brad Hazzard has said that judge Nielson’s comments are appalling and caused extreme concern.

“Incest is completely reprehensible, unacceptable, disgusting and criminal.”

Hazard has reported judge Neilson’s comments to the Judicial Commission of New South Wales for investigation. He also requested the District Court suspend the judge from criminal trials until the investigation into Neilson was completed.

Judge Neilson made the comments during the trial of a brother charged with raping his younger sister. The man has pleaded guilty to sexually assaulting his sister when she was 10 or 11 years old in 1973 or 1974 but has pleaded not guilty to charges relating to sex they had in 1981, when she was 18 and he was 26.

"By that stage they are both mature adults," the judge said.

"The complainant has been sexually awoken, shall we say, by having two relationships with men and she had become 'free' when the second relationship broke down. The only thing that might change that is the fact that they were a brother and sister but we've come a long way from the 1950s – when the position of the English Common Law was that sex outside marriage was not lawful."

The [crimes] came to light this week when former Phoenix Police Officer Chris Wilson was charged with performing sex acts on two underage boys. Laieski was allegedly one of those boys. His attorney claims that both Laieski and the other boy were, in fact, Wilson's victims.

"It would be inappropriate for our office to comment on what is an ongoing and very serious criminal matter," the statement [from the Mayor's office] read. "The victims in this case deserve justice, and we have full confidence that the legal system will handle it in an appropriate manner."

Laieski gained national attention in 2011 when he appeared in a documentary about bullying and discussed issues involving gay youth with both President Barack Obama and Vice President Joe Biden.

Laieski has pleaded not guilty. His attorney, Cary Lackey, said Laieski and the other boy were in fact the underage victims of a Phoenix police officer.

Former officer Chris J. Wilson was indicted last year on 10 counts of sexual conduct with a minor stemming from allegations he performed sex acts on a 14-year-old and a 17-year-old and participated in a sexual act with the two together at the older boy’s apartment, according to court documents.

In court filings, Laieski says the charges against him arise from a “consensual relationship he had with a 14-year-old when he himself was 16-years-old, or at most, 17-years-old.”

Under state law, a minor who engages in intercourse or oral sex with another minor 14 or younger can be found guilty of a sex crime. Children under age 15 cannot legally consent to sexual activity, even if their partner is also a minor.

Wilson was politically connected, and as explained in a December 2012 New Times story by Monica Alonzo, Wilson's supervisor, Phoenix police Sergeant Mark Schweikert, alleged that Phoenix Councilman Tom Simplot and Assistant Police Chief Tracy Montgomery -- who are both openly gay -- were "influencing" how he supervised Wilson.

The 14-year-old boy, who's also emerged as a prominent young activist against anti-gay bullying, had told his parents about his alleged relationships with Laieski and Wilson, and his parents relayed that information to police.

Caleb Laieski, now 18, was 17 at the time of the alleged abuse. His alleged victim, a close friend he met on TrevorSpace (a social media site for children and young adults aged 13-24 who have an interest in homosexuality), was only 14 at the time. The younger boy said the sex was consensual, but that he felt “pressured” to participate. However, Arizona law says no one younger than 15 is capable of giving consent.

Laieski rose to national prominence after he and a 35-year-old friend, Casey Cameron, sent e-mails to 5,000 Arizona schools in 2011 demanding special protections for gay students and threatening legal action if they failed to bring their policies in line with his demands. The teen then dropped out of high school, got his GED, and traveled to Washington, D.C., to lobby for the Student Non-Discrimination Act.

In 2012, Laieski was given a position in Mayor Stanton’s office as a “youth and diversity liaison,” advising the mayor on matters of policy having to do with youth, particularly gay youth. He was an “advocate on loan,” meaning his salary was funded by an outside group, called “One in Ten.”

According to police records, part of his job was to represent the mayor’s office at local homosexual protests, which is how he got to know Wilson, who was usually assigned as the officer in charge of policing such events.
