The trial of WikiLeaker Army Pfc. Bradley Manning, 25, is exposing a military command structure that is afraid to make logical and reasonable decisions regarding "mentally unstable" personnel. Unlike Corporal Max Klinger of the 1970s TV comedy M*A*S*H, who pretended to be a psycho transvestite to get an Army discharge, when Manning displayed himself likewise, his superior hid the behavior and maintained Manning's security access. Defense attorney's are arguing for lenient sentencing of Manning based on his mental illness of gender confusion.

Defense lawyers say [Manning's abnormal behavior] is crucial to their effort to convince a military judge not to impose the maximum 90-year sentence on Manning, who was convicted in a court martial of espionage and other charges for the illegal disclosures. They are trying to show that the Oklahoma-born soldier was nearing an emotional breakdown . . . [and] military commanders knew he was mentally unstable but did not remove him from Iraq or dismiss him from the Army.
. . . Army supervisors decided that Manning required counseling but did not need to be removed from the unit with an official derogatory report. A so-called derog report could have cost Manning his security clearance and prevented him from leaking classified material.

Manning was convicted July 30 of passing more than 700,000 documents, combat videos and diplomatic cables to WikiLeaks, founded by Julian Assange. But he was acquitted of the most serious charge: aiding the enemy.
The defense portrayed Manning as a gender-conflicted gay man struggling to serve in the military . . .
Earlier Wednesday, Capt. Michael Worsley, a therapist, testified that Manning was under great duress when he revealed his homosexuality to him.
"I questioned why (commanders) would want to leave somebody in a position with the issue they had," [Worsley] said.

Manning eventually came out to Capt. Michael Worsley, emailing the clinical psychologist a photo of himself in a long, blond wig and lipstick. The photo was attached to a letter titled "My problem," in which Manning described his internal struggle and said he had hoped that a military career would "get rid of it."
Navy Capt. David Moulton, a psychiatrist who spent 21 hours interviewing Manning at Fort Leavenworth, Kan., after his arrest, testified as a defense witness that Manning's gender identity disorder, combined with narcissistic personality traits, idealism and his lack of friends in Iraq, caused him to conclude he could change the world by leaking classified information.

A former master sergeant who ignored a picture of WikiLeaks source Pfc. Bradley Manning dressed as a woman faced tough questions Tuesday.
"This is my problem. I've had signs of it for a very long time," Manning had said in an April 24, 2010, email to his then-supervisor, former Master Sgt. Paul Adkins. "It's caused problems within my family. I thought a career in the military would get rid of it."
A black-and-white copy of the attached photograph, displayed in court, showed Manning wearing what appeared to have been a straight blonde wig and bright lipstick. He appeared to have taken the photograph of himself staring into a camera from inside a car.
Adkins did not forward this email to his supervisor, Capt. Steve Lim, until November, nearly half a year after Manning's arrest.
In the wake of the WikiLeaks disclosures, military investigators reduced Adkin's rank to sergeant first class and wrote him a letter of reprimand. He is now retired.

Like many other witnesses, [Navy Capt. David] Moulton confirmed that Manning has gender dysphoria, meaning a discomfort with the gender he was assigned at birth. . . . Many transgender advocates have raised concerns about this line of defense, which they fear can set back advancements toward depathologizing gender identity issues.
[Capt. Michael Worsley] described Manning's seeming relief when divulging his exploration of a female identity [of Breanna] . . .
Though he currently prefers to be identified as male, Manning said that his self-identification as female during his deployment caused him "great pain" and "dire" consequences.
Capt. Worsley said Manning divulged his gender identity secret to him but not that he had been sending hundreds of thousands of sensitive documents to WikiLeaks . . .
Even today, the military prohibits transgender enlistment under so-called "medical" restrictions, which shoehorn "transsexualism" into what it calls "psychosexual conditions." These include "exhibitionism, transvestitism, voyeurism and other paraphilias."

SPC Bradley Manning, the treasonous WikiLeaker who took out his homosexual frustrations by exposing America's military and diplomatic secrets to enemies worldwide, faces the military justice process leading to court martial, or possibly a death sentence.

A U.S. Army medical and mental evaluation team has determined that WikiLeaks suspect PFC Bradley Manning is both physically and mentally competent to face court martial. The 706 Board, as it's called, took several months to make that determination.
The board's ruling clears the way now for Manning to appear before an Article 32 hearing -- the military equivalent of a grand jury -- to determine if he should face court martial.
The Army has leveled nearly 30 charges against Manning in connection with the alleged theft of "hundreds of thousands" of classified military and State Department documents, many of which eventually were publicly released by Wikileaks.

Army spokesman Gary Tallman says a panel of experts completed its medical and mental evaluation of Pfc. Bradley Manning on April 22, and informed Army officials Friday of the conclusion.
Tallman says no date has been set yet for the initial court hearing, and added that the evaluation board's findings "have no bearing on the guilt, innocence, or any potential defenses of the accused."
The Army private is suspected of obtaining hundreds of thousands of classified and sensitive documents while serving in Iraq and providing them to the website. He faces about two dozen charges, including aiding the enemy. That charge can bring the death penalty or life in prison.
Manning was transferred from a Marine Corps brig in Quantico, Va., last week to a new facility at Fort Leavenworth prison in Kansas.

One of the charges he faces involves aiding the enemy – of which, if he is found guilty, could technically carry a death sentence. However, Army prosecutors have indicated they would seek a sentence of up to life in prison instead.
Leavenworth officials were at pains to stress that since last week's transfer there he was no longer deemed in danger of killing himself and would not be detained in isolation. "Typically in this facility, we would not keep anybody on suicide watch more than 24 to 48 hours," said Col Dawn Hilton.

. . . The same sort of problems involving classified documents and security clearances that slowed his psychiatric evaluation will also delay his trial.
And that's not including the Department of Justice's attempts to build a case against Julian Assange and Wikileaks. Manning would obviously be key to any prosecution of Assange, and the government almost surely would not want to give anything away by bringing Manning to trial before it finished trying to build a case against WikiLeak's co-founder.
