Atheists Condemn Kansas Gov. for Acting Christian

The Americans United for Separation of Church and State has expressed outrage at Kansas Gov. Sam Brownback for participating in a Christian event in Topeka called ReignDown USA that took place just yards from the governor’s mansion.  In Brownback's official proclamation of that "Day of Restoration," he called Christians to repentance in response to God's judgment on America as a sinful nation.
. . . if My people who are called by My name will humble themselves, and pray and seek My face, and turn from their wicked ways, then I will hear from heaven, and will forgive their sin and heal their land.

Several hundred people attended the ReignDown USA event Saturday. Organizers say the event was broadcast to about 25 million people via television and the Internet, and that no public funds were used for the event.

Brownback talked for about 10 minutes and said he turned to religion in 1995 when was diagnosed with cancer. He ended his time on stage praying for forgiveness of his sins and for the sins of others.

The ReignDown movement was envisioned in July 2005 by stay-at-home mom Shawn-Marie Cole, of Glendale, Ariz., the daughter of the Rev. Walt Kallestad, pastor of Community Church of Joy in Glendale, Ariz.

“Gov. Brownback didn’t approach us,” she said. “We approached him.”

“Everyone is invited,” Cole said, “but only one name will be lifted up, and that is the name of Jesus Christ.”

[In a video promotion of the event,] Brownback recounted the historic precedents for America’s governmental leaders to call the nation to prayer and repentance, including George Washington, Ben Franklin and Abraham Lincoln.

“Leaders throughout American history have always looked to the Lord in difficult times and asked for favor and help,” Brownback said in the video.

God Hears Thousands Praying for America, Media Doesn't

If a tree falls in the forest . . . or . . . If over ten thousand Christians pray on the streets of Philadelphia but there's zero media there, do they make a noise?
America for Jesus, a coalition of ministries, has organized prayer assemblies across America calling for Christians to take seriously 2 Chronicles 7:14 and pray for revival and even for a Third Great Awakening.
"America is in a state of emergency evidenced by widespread moral depravity and economic meltdown. There is only one remedy; we need to renew our covenant with God. We are calling America back to God and proclaiming liberty and freedom over our nation."
-- Anne Gimenez, National Chairperson, America for Jesus

“We have to be salt and light. We have to redirect this country back toward the light as people of God.”
-- Governor Rick Perry (R-Texas)

“America’s ultimate hope doesn’t rest with the president but with God. Its ultimate problem isn’t political but spiritual. However, the political realm affects every other and holds a critical place. The Scriptures record that unrighteous and ungodly leaders can lead a nation away from God and to judgment, while righteous and godly leaders can lead a nation to restoration. America is at a critical juncture.”

The question is, Prayer in America: Hidden Faith, or Public?

-- From "Robertson: This is Jesus' nation" by United Press International 9/29/12

Thousands of people packed a prayer rally at Philadelphia's Independence Mall Saturday where evangelist Pat Robertson declared "this nation belongs to Jesus."

"I don't care what the ACLU says or any atheist says, this nation belongs to Jesus," Robertson said.

The rally was part of a two-day event organized by a coalition of ministries called One Nation under God.

The group is calling for 40 days of prayer leading up to the presidential election.

From "Robertson, Perkins speak at prayer rally in Philly" by MaryClaire Dale, Associated Press 9/29/12

[Family Research Council president Tony] Perkins asked the crowd to pray for elected officials including Obama.

Speakers throughout the day condemned abortion, gay marriage and population control as practiced by Planned Parenthood. Christian rock music filled the historic mall as speakers challenged the crowd to overcome the seven deadly sins: pride, greed, lust, envy, gluttony, wrath and slothfulness.

The rally was held outside of Independence Hall, where the Declaration of Independence was signed. Pennsylvania is also where evangelist George Whitefield preached during the first Great Awakening, the 18th-century religious revival that spread through the American colonies.

Organizers plan another prayer rally Oct. 20 in Washington, D.C., two weeks before President Barack Obama faces Republican Mitt Romney in the presidential election.

Christian conservatives who blame "moral depravity" for everything from the recession to terrorism are converging on Philadelphia for a rally they hope will spark a religious revival as Election Day nears.

John Blanchard, national coordinator for "America for Jesus 2012," said the two-day event starting Friday night is nonpartisan. It's modeled after the 1980 "Washington for Jesus" rally, considered a pivotal show of organizational strength by the then-fledgling Christian right. Bishop Anne Gimenez, whose late husband John helped lead the 1980 assembly, is a lead organizer of the Philadelphia gathering.

David Barton, a self-taught historian who emphasizes the Christian roots of the U.S., is another rally supporter. Barton wrote in a Feb. 29 article that Obama has shown "hostility toward Biblical people of faith" while giving "preferential treatment" to Muslims.

From "Family Research Council's Perkins Launches '40 Days to Save America' Campaign" by Troy Anderson, Newsmax 9/24/12

Today, the United States faces multiple crises — a potential economic collapse, moral disintegration, growing secular humanism, attacks on religious liberty, a spate of historic natural disasters, and a severe drought, according to “40 Days to Save America.”

These crises — together more daunting than those Americans faced in 1776, 1863, and 1941— are beyond the power of human beings to resolve without divine intervention — and “nothing short of a Third Great Awakening can save us,” according to the campaign.

. . . faith leaders are calling on pastors, priests, and rabbis to open their churches and synagogues for 40 days of prayer and fasting. They are also calling for “Christian and Jewish voters to make informed choices, voting not as Republicans or Democrats, but as followers of the living God.”

From "Rick Perry Urges 'Christian Soldiers' to Fight Secularism" by Myles Collier, Christian Post Contributor 9/20/12

"I urge everybody listening to commit to these 40 days … to commit to spreading the word about this extraordinary event, commit to encouraging your fellow members of your congregation, or for that matter the people you work around daily, to join you in committing to taking the decisive action we need to spread God's grace throughout the United States," Perry said during the call as reported by the Statesman.com.

"Satan runs across the world with his doubt and his untruths and what have you, and one of the untruths out there (that) is driven is that people of faith should not be involved in the public arena," Perry said.

"And it falls on us. I mean we truly are Christian warriors, Christian soldiers, and it's for us as Americans to stand our ground and to firmly send a message to Washington that our nation is about more than some secular laws and activist courts," he added

Vatican: Liberal Catholic Candidates Must Repent Publicly

Catholic politicians who publicly support abortion or homosexual marriage and then seek to turn away from such “gravely sinful acts” must perform “public” actions of “repentance,” said Raymond Burke, the archbishop emeritus of St. Louis and the current head of the highest court at the Vatican, the Supreme Tribunal of the Apostolic Signatura.

UPDATE 3/14/13: Pope Francis I Says Wayward Politicians Can't Take Communion

UPDATE 10/20/10: Pope elevates Burke to cardinal

-- From "Vatican's Chief Justice: Catholic Politicians Who Support Abortion or Gay Marriage Must Publicly Repent" by Michael W. Chapman, CNSNews.com 10/18/10

In remarks at the 5th Human Life International World Prayer Congress for Life in Rome, Italy, Arbp. Burke said that the culture today pushes a “cafeteria Catholicism,” whereby some Catholics pick and choose “what part of the deposit of faith to believe and practice.” As a result, “there has developed in places a false notion that the Christian or any person of faith, in order to be a true citizen of his nation, must bracket his faith life from his public life.”

“We find self-professed Catholics, for example, who sustain and support the right of a woman to procure the death of the infant in her womb, or the right of two persons of the same sex to the recognition which the State gives to a man and a woman who have entered into marriage,” said the archbishop. “It is not possible to be a practicing Catholic and to conduct oneself publicly in this manner.”

Arbp. Burke also said that Catholics in public life “who persistently violate the moral law” on abortion and homosexual marriage “lead many into confusion and or even error,” which does the “gravest harm to our brother s and sisters and, therefore, to the whole nation.”

From "Archbishop Burke laments effect of dissenting bishops, pro-abortion politicians" posted at CatholicCulture.org 10/15/10

“When a person has culpably espoused and cooperated in gravely sinful acts, leading many into error and confusion over fundamental questions regarding respect for life and integrity of marriage and family, his repentance of such actions must also be public,” Archbishop Burke added, referring to Catholic politicians who support abortion and same-sex marriage.

The “perennial discipline of the Church [has] prohibited the giving of Holy Communion or the granting of a Church funeral to those who persist after admonition in the grave violation of the moral law,” he noted. “It is said that these disciplines which the Church has consistently observed down the centuries presume to pass judgment on eternal judgment of a soul, a judgment that belongs to God alone, and therefore can be abandoned.”

“On the contrary, [such] public action[s] of the soul are in violation of the moral law, and do grave harm to all who are confused and led into error by these actions.”

Christians Pray, "God Save America"

An Egyptian-born megachurch pastor is calling out for 100,000 “Bible-believing” Americans to pray for the United States.

“Real change in America is still possible as long as there are Christians willing to consecrate themselves to God in prayer for the spiritual state of this nation.”

-- From "Megachurch Pastor Seeks 100,000 Christians to 'Save America'" by Michelle A. Vu, Christian Post Reporter 7/27/10

Dr. Michael Youssef, founding pastor of The Church of The Apostles and president of the ministry Leading the Way in Atlanta, has found 42,450 people so far to join him in daily prayer for the United States since the “God Save America” campaign launched on July 4.

A major emphasis of the prayer campaign is to remind American Christians that the United States was founded on dependence upon God. But today, Youssef says, the country’s leaders and citizens try to attain success in their own terms.

Participants of the “God Save America” campaign are expected to offer up prayers of gratitude for the rich Christian history of America; repentance for individual and national sins; petition for God’s blessing on America; and pray for wisdom and discernment for elected officials as well as for boldness and strength to share the Gospel with neighbors.

“The reason for our country’s decay – our economic turmoil, our social ills, the church’s coldness and apostasy from the Truth … is because we have departed from the one true God,” Youssef said. “He wants to bless our country in His sovereignty and mercy, but we need to repent of our pride and willful independence.

Pastor Warns America of Socialism, Calls for Prayer

America currently stands in a very dangerous position, said renowned pastor and author Dr. Charles Stanley. Today more than ever, the country is turning away from God and moving closer toward socialism, he warned. And the consequences will be grave.

Dr. Stanley is calling for 140 days of prayer for our nation (see below).

-- From "Dr. Charles Stanley Warns of the Danger of a Tide of Socialism" by David Outten, Atlanta Conservative Examiner 7/4/10

In the July 4th sermon posted on InTouch.org Dr. Charles Stanley, Pastor of First Baptist of Atlanta, spoke on "Turning the Tide." [click here to watch] A primary focus of the sermon is the clash between Christianity and Socialism.

Dr. Stanley said, "We find ourselves, as a nation, violating the laws of God and heading in a direction that is going to be disastrous for us, for our children and for the generations that are to come, unless there is a change. . . . There is a tide that has touched our shores and reached the heart of our nation. It is a tide that is bringing with it ideas and philosophies, actions and attitudes, that will ultimately destroy the way of life that you and I have."

He said Christianity interferes with the spread of Socialism.

Dr. Stanley closed with a story about German Christians gathering to pray in 1989 -- against the will of their Communist government. Over time, the prayer meetings swelled from a handful to over 10,000. It got so there were too many to fit in the church where the prayers started. Very soon the Berlin Wall came down.

Such a sermon is so rare that InTouch ministries has been overwhelmed by the response. Their web servers are having difficult handling the traffic.

From "Influential Pastor Warns of Socialism, Departure from God" by Lillian Kwon, Christian Post Reporter 7/3/10

Speaking to thousands at First Baptist Church of Atlanta and to a live Web audience on Friday [July 2], Stanley delivered a sobering 4th of July message [click here to watch] about a dangerous spiritual tide that is engulfing the country and the crucial need for prayer.

Socialism, he pointed out, is opposed primarily to Christianity and Judaism.

"In Christianity, we're taught to do our best because we've been gifted by God. So there's motivation, willingness and we cooperate," he explained. "We use our spiritual gifts for the good of everyone."

But under a socialist society, in which the government controls all means of production and distribution, there is no motivation for diligence and creativity is stifled, he said.

He added, "Naturally, when the government takes control, do you think that freedom of speech is always going to be there?"

"The tide is bringing in a control that will indeed attempt to silence the truth and will attempt to squash the religious devotion and worship of the people of God."

"It is an attempt to destroy the Christian spirit in America," he said.

"There is a war going on against Jesus," he declared. "It's part of the strategy. The primary reason for this war against Him is He is interfering with the plan to make this a socialist nation. Mark it down. It is the truth."

"Do you want this nation to keep going where it's going or do you want us to get back on track?" he posed.

Prayer, he said, is the one thing he knows that works.

Change We Can Believe In (2 Chron. 7:14)

America needs change. Yet the change we need will not come from Washington or Wall Street. It must come from God. It must begin with God's repentant people praying to Him for the change He requires and the change we need.
If my people, who are called by my name, will humble themselves and pray and seek my face and turn from their wicked ways, then will I hear from heaven and will forgive their sin and will heal their land.
(2 Chron. 7:14)
-- From "Conservatives Urge Americans to Pray for a Troubled Nation" by Susan Jones, CNSNews Senior Editor 5/20/09

America is in desperate need of spiritual healing, say conservative Christian leaders, who are organizing a day of mass prayer and repentance on behalf of the nation.

The “Call 2 Fall” event will take place on July 5. “The day after America celebrates her independence, it's our goal to have eight million Christians declaring our dependence on God,” the Family Research Council says on its Web site. “The Call 2 Fall is a simple but powerful commitment to get on our faces before the Lord, asking Him to reshape our lives and renew our land.”

“Only He can quiet the storms and turn the hearts of this country--and our culture--toward Him. Only He can restore a respect for life, marriage, and faith in the halls of power. And only we can ask Him to,” the FRC says.

The event also has historical precedent: The First Continental Congress called for a day of public humiliation, fasting, and prayer throughout the Colonies on July 20th, 1775, just after war broke out with England, the FRC noted.
