-- From "Online survey finds 8 in 10 adults have engaged in sexting" by Emanuella Grinberg, CNN 8/8/15
Among 870 respondents surveyed online who identified as adults in the United States between the ages of 18 and 82, 88% reported having sexted at least once. A slightly lower number of respondents, 82%, reported sexting in the past year, according to an abstract published on the American Psychological Association's website.
Sexting often gets a bad rap as risky behavior associated with sexual harassment, unwanted sexual advances or worse, especially for teens. The research aims to "reframe sexting as a positive relationship behavior," [Stasko] said.
For respondents who described their relationship as anything other than "very committed," higher levels of sexting were related to higher levels of relationship satisfaction. For respondents who said they were in a "very committed" relationship, there was no significant relationship between sexting and relationship satisfaction.
Sexting is more strongly associated with satisfaction in men than women, Stasko said.

From "Many U.S. Adults Sext, and It May Even Help Some Relationships" by Alan Mozes, HealthDay Reporter 8/8/15
"Most people have focused on the dangers of sexting and how it can harm a relationship," said study lead author Emily Stasko, a doctoral candidate in the department of psychology at Drexel University in Philadelphia. "But context matters. Sexting is definitely something that many adults are doing, it's not going away, and the findings indicate that it can actually be good for relationships and sexual satisfaction."
To get a snapshot of current sexting habits, the study team conducted a 20-minute online survey among 870 Americans. The participants were between the ages of 18 and 82, with a median age of 35, the researchers said.
All of the respondents were heterosexual. Nearly six in 10 were women, and more than 80 percent were white. While more than four in 10 said they were currently married, an equal number said they had never been married.

While previous research has focused on the potential health risks of sexting, this study highlights the fact that sexting may have a positive role in helping adult sexual partners communicate.
“I actually recommend sexting — particularly the texting part of sexting — for [couples] to show desire for each other,” said Patti Britton, a clinical sexologist and interim dean of the Institute for Advanced Study of Human Sexuality in San Francisco.
“I use it as a homework assignment, when I have couples who are stale or their relationship is what I would call ‘sexually dead on arrival,’” said Britton, who wasn’t involved in the new study. “Using the online world creates a way for them to find steppingstones or building blocks to reconnect in an erotic or a sexual way.”
