Top Penn. Republican 'Evolves' To 'Gay Marriage'

Tom Ridge, who was President George W. Bush's choice to be the first Secretary of Homeland Security, says that the only way for Republicans to win upcoming national elections is to abandon the party platform positions on social issues such as same-sex "marriage" and abortion.  In a recent speech, he said that the party must be tolerant toward government policies based on deviant sexual behavior and murder of unborn children.
“[Republicans] just come across as too damned self-righteous . . . if we’re going to change the party, we should accept [gay marriage and abortion] and build a positive agenda rather than just saying no . . .”

-- From "Guys, Tom Ridge Changed Mind on Gay Marriage *Months Ago*" by Simon van Zuylen-Wood, Philadelphia Magazine 10/25/13

As we told you back in March, Ridge signed an amicus brief urging the Supremes to strike down California’s Prop 8 ban. At the time, of course, this was notable: Ridge signed Pennsylvania’s ban on gay marriage and hadn’t publicly indicated his support for same-sex marriage until the brief. So, just to be clear, Tom Ridge has been a gay rights proponent since at least March, 2013.

From "Tom Ridge tells gay Republicans that GOP is sometimes too 'self-righteous'" by John L. Micek, Central Pennsylvania Patriot-News 10/25/13

Former Pennsylvania Gov. Tom Ridge says he thinks Republicans should take a more practical and less divisive approach to politics as the party approaches the 2014 mid-terms and the 2016 presidential cycle.

When it came to his stance on gay issues, Ridge said that "life, politics and government is a journey, and your positions on issues as you go along that journey may become more fully embedded or, because of circumstances or other changes, they can change. As you know, when I was governor, I signed the Defense of Marriage Act [in Pennsylvania]. Since that time, frankly, my point of view has evolved.”

[Ridge spoke of] ". . . a philosophy that I hope most [Republicans] embrace as I talk about what we need to start winning national elections and, frankly, be a more positive and compelling force for change in the 21st Century," he said. "You can’t change government unless you win elections. Our roots are conservative, but we should be far less — not even far less — we oughtta quit being judgmental.”

I’m pleased to join you today and to be among those who supported the Amicus brief in the case of Perry v. Brown (Hollingsworth) [to overturn Prop 8 -- the one-man-one-woman marriage amendment passed by a majority of Californians].

. . . all of us are equal in the eyes of the God we worship and the same should be true of the government to which we “render unto Caesar.”

. . . [I have also evoled away from the GOP platform] on any number of issues – abortion, immigration, school choice, fiscal policy, foreign policy.

. . . For many observers, the GOP has become intolerant, judgmental and self-righteous – perhaps worthy of attitudes of the Pilgrims in 1620, but hardly attractive qualities for a political party nearly 400 years later.

. . . Our own narrow thinking on social issues is one of the principal reasons we have lost the last two national elections.

. . . If our expectation is the respect of our individual rights, we must respect the rights of others to live and let live.

. . . If we want a government that acknowledges our God-given right to freely choose how we live—in regard [to] marriage and others issues – we must demand a government that respects the rights of others to choose and follow their conscience just the same.

From "Tom Ridge Ignores Responsibility for Kermit Gosnell, Attacks Pro-Lifers" by Steven Ertelt, LifeNews.com 10/31/13

Former Governor Tom Ridge of Pennsylvania is not interested in accepting any responsibility for the horrors that happened at Kermit Gosnell’s abortion clinic.

Instead of acknowledging how the Grand Jury report in the case pointed the blame squarely at the feet of his administration for not following state law and routinely inspecting abortion clinics, Ridge has decided to attack pro-lifers.

Gosnell was allowed to operate his “house of horrors” with impunity thanks to irresponsible and unjustifiable policies put in place by former Governor Tom Ridge. The grand jury report in the Gosnell case revealed that “Ridge administration officials concluded that inspections would be ‘putting a barrier up to women’ seeking abortions. Better to leave clinics to do as they pleased.’”

At the instructions of Ridge and in support of the multi-million dollar abortion cabal, neither Gosnell’s abortion facility nor any other Pennsylvania abortion clinic had been inspected by the Pennsylvania Department of Health for the 17 years between 1993 and 2010.
