First lady Michelle Obama asked faith and community leaders Monday to “shake up their congregations” and help her play a “critical role” in helping to eliminate childhood obesity.

“You all play a vital role in so many aspects of people’s lives: offering counseling on family matters, providing comfort and guidance in times of crisis, being there for folks during some of the most important moments of their lives,” the first lady said. “All of you know how to empower people. The faith and communities aspect will get support from the White House Office of Faith-based and Neighborhood Partnerships as well as the Partnership Centers at the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services and the U.S. Department of Agriculture, a White House aide said.

Mrs. Obama lauded efforts that were underway prior to the Let’s Move campaign and spoke of the crucial role that churches, congregations and community groups play in people’s lives.

“We’ve created a special tool kit on our letsmove.gov website. This toolkit provides all kinds of great ideas and helpful tips for faith and community leaders seeking to promote healthy eating and fitness in their congregations and in their communities,” Mrs. Obama said.

The First AME Church of Los Angeles, the Progressive National Baptist Convention, Girl Scouts USA and Catholic Charities are among the first 50 to make a commitment to increase feeding programs for children, encourage exercise and to plant vegetable gardens.
