Legalize Incest, Post-death Sex, Say Young Liberals

Descending the inevitable slippery slope, the youth wing of the Swedish Liberal party has voted in favor of the legalization of incest and necrophilia saying that one person's vial and disgusting sexual orientation is another person's right to free expression.
“It should be your own decision what happens with your body after you die, and if that happens to be that you want to bequeath your remains to a museum or to science, or if you want to bequeath your remains to someone to sleep with them, then that should be OK.”
-- Cecilia Johnnson, chairman of the Stockholm branch of the Liberal People’s Party (LPP)

Johnnson told the Swedish newspaper Aftonbladet that laws against incest, necrophilia, and other sexual depravity are wrong and protect no-one.

Her anti-morality policies were supported by the LPP’s entire youth wing at a vote over the weekend.

If adopted as law, two family members who are both over the age of 15 who want to have sexual relations with each over would be entirely free to do so. Also, if a person states in their final will and testament that they want to leave their body behind for people to have sex with it, they would be free to do so also.

Liberal Youth Leader Cecilia Johnsson stated that they view such move to legalizing necrophilia and incest as a progressive step for the country. "We are a youth organization and one of our task is to think one step further", Johnsson said as reported by Info Wars. "I understand that it can be seen as unusual and disgusting but legislation can not be based on it being disgusting", she added.

They also stated that having sex with the dead should be legalized if a written consent was secured from the person before death. The party's youth wing argued that an individual should be allowed to decide how their bodies will be treated even after death whether it is for science or for their loved ones.

Cecilia Johnsson, president of LUF Stockholm, told Aftonbladet counter-incest legislation amounted to “morality law”, adding: “These laws protect no one right now”.

It is not the first time similar proposals have been raised in Europe.

In 2014, the German Ethics Council also called for an end to the criminalisation of incest between siblings, after examining the case of a man who was jailed for having four children with his sister.

“The majority of the German Ethics Council is of the opinion that it is not appropriate for a criminal law to preserve a social taboo,” a statement said.

From "Youth Voters Say Legalize Incest And Necrophilia In Sweden" by Zachary Volkert, The Inquisitr News 2/23/16

The nearly universally reviled taboos of incest and necrophilia have long been a scare tactic for conservatives who argued that that the legalization of homosexuality would lead to increasingly squeamish sex acts to find acceptance. It is techniques like this that are one of the primary reasons young voters are less likely to vote for Republicans.

Noting that it was the next logical step in sexual liberation, Cecilia [Johnnson] stated that it wasn’t sensible to continue with a ban on incest and necrophilia just because people found it unappealing, according to quotes translated by The Daily Mail.

The Swedish Youth party is not without their arguments. Autonomy of one’s own body, they stress, also extends to things that people might find repulsive. They don’t believe that incest or necrophilia should necessarily be illegal just because they have complicated histories and low level of interest.

Former Liberal MP Carl B. Hamilton said that the youth wing was only concerned about publicity; not the real issues of Sweden. He wrote: "Surely, you must understand that people are laughing at your liberalism, you nitwits?" on a Facebook group for Liberal party members, lashing out at the youth wing.

Hamilton further continued with: "And what other challenges facing society is on the top 100-list for Stockholm's Liberal Youth? Sex with hippos?"

However, Sweden is not unfamiliar with such efforts by liberals.

Left-wing news outlets such as Salon had stated that 'pedophilia is merely a sexual orientation and not a mental disorder.'

Muslims Force Maryland Schools Closed Routinely

In order to accommodate demands for observance of numerous Muslim holidays, the politically correct Howard County School Board voted to close schools for virtually every religious event under the sun regardless of the prevalence or absence of such adherents in the supposed multicultural school system of suburban Maryland.
"I strongly believe that our school calendar should be inclusive of the cultures and religions of all Howard County residents.  In a county where we pride ourselves on our diversity, we have to demonstrate that in terms of our actions."
-- Janet Siddiqui, Board Member

“Howard County is no longer majority Judeo-Christian.  We are made up of all kinds of people.  There is nothing to study in my opinion.  It's either all or none. I cannot vote for anything that is not inclusive."
-- Ann De Lacy, Board Member

“Once you open to that [long list of holidays], you have to honor every single one, and that becomes impractical in finding a way to serve school for 180 days.”

Rejecting an option that would have kept schools open on the Jewish High Holidays, the school board voted Thursday night to also give students off days to observe [the Hindu holiday] Diwali, [the Muslim holiday] Eid and the Lunar New Year.

The move to accommodate observances of additional religious holidays only applies to the 2016-17 school year while studies are conducted.

Numbers of area school systems have been making adjustments related to observing religious holidays.

Anne Arundel County Public Schools recently decided to open schools on Rosh Hashanah in 2016 for the first time in more than a decade. Teachers aren’t allowed to give tests and exams on that day or any other day of “major religious observances” such as Eid al-Adha and Yom Kippur.

From "Md. school system keeps Jewish holidays, adds days off for Diwali, Lunar New Year and Eid al-Adha" by Donna St. George, Washington Post 1/15/16

The board said its action — in a unanimous 8-0 vote — was a one-year decision, for the 2016-2017 school year, that would come as the system of 55,000 students studies the issue and plans a voluntary survey of religious preferences. It asked district staff to report back with a range of options for how to implement the change.

More broadly, Howard’s action is likely to draw attention as school systems nationally struggle with how to create an inclusive school calendar — balancing fairness, logistics and legal constraints — as their communities are increasingly diverse and vocal.

Maryland state law requires schools to be closed on Christmas and Good Friday, as well as Easter Monday. Howard schools have chosen to close for the Jewish holidays since 1979, when officials said staff absentee rates of 12 percent were interfering with instruction.

From "Howard County adds Muslim, Hindu holidays to school calendar" by Lisa Philip, Howard County Times - The Baltimore Sun 1/15/16

. . . during a discussion at the board's meeting on Thursday night, several members expressed the need for next year's academic calendar go beyond closing schools on the two Jewish holidays, to be more inclusive of the county's increasingly diverse population and to allow non-Judeo-Christian students to celebrate their religious and cultural traditions. . . . [even though] The school system does not record the religious backgrounds of its students.

[Superintendent Renee] Foose also recommended that the board hire an independent firm to survey and collect data about students' and families' religious and cultural observances, to inform the work of the 2017 to 2018 calendar committee.

[Board member Bess] Altwerger said that she agreed with the suggestion, but that the school system should recognize Lunar New Year Eve, Diwali and Eid al-Adha in the meantime. She found sympathetic views among most of her fellow board members.

Members of the East Asian, Muslim and Hindu communities have advocated for the inclusion of their religious holidays for at least the past two school years. Eid al-Adha, an important holiday on the Muslim calendar, and Diwali, equally as important for the Hindu community, have never been recognized on the county's school calendar before.

Last year after hearing requests from the Chinese and Korean communities, the board voted to place a professional development day on the Lunar New Year in the 2015-2016 school year. . . .

Because of the need for separation between church and state, [board member Sandie] French said, holidays cannot be given to students for religious reasons, but rather must be given for logistical reasons.

White Christian Terrorists, Warns Maine Principal

While making a Facebook post in support of Democrat presidential candidate Bernie Sanders, Piet Lammert, Assistant Principal at Camden Hills Regional High School in Rockport, Maine, warned readers of white Christian male terrorists.  The superintendent of Five Town Community School District (Camden, Maine) has announced that the hullabaloo that erupted locally over this public commentary should be considered over now that Lammert has apologized.
The only terrorists we need to fear are domestic white “Christian” men with easy access to guns. Vote Bernie - That is all. Enjoy your day.

I will say that I know Piet, and he is someone who genuinely accepts all people. The Five-Town CSD is committed to providing an atmosphere open to all students, families and staff and has a well-earned reputation for doing so.”

When reached Friday, Lammert said he posted an apology on his Facebook page that morning and would be sharing the statement in an email to parents.

From "Apology post" by Piet Lammert 12/4/15

I am writing to take responsibility and apologize for a post that I made on my private Facebook account yesterday. I mistakenly left my setting open to “Public” and in doing so made a post that offended some members of our community and beyond. I deeply regret doing so, take full responsibility, and hope that those I offended will accept my apology.

With true humility, I write to apologize for the offensive statement that I recently posted on Facebook. I did not intend this statement literally when I wrote it–it was an exaggeration–but soon after realized that it was unintentionally hurtful, offensive, and divisive at a time when more than ever we need compassion and understanding.

In short, I did not mean what I said and wish with all my heart that I could take it back. But I need to take responsibility for it nonetheless, because I wrote it. It does not represent who I am or what I believe, but I wrote it. This post is an effort to at least begin to make amends.

Had I simply written what I meant, the post would have reflected my urgent distress at the epidemic of mass violence in our country, which more recent events have proven to span all social groups. Ironically, in my effort to point out that we run the risk of simplifying the problem by singling out a particular ethnic group, I did exactly that to the group to which I belong. It was careless and rash.

Homosexualists Battle Against 'Transgender Rights'

With the rise in power of the Gay Agenda, including control of the White House, has come an internal battle for power within the ranks of the sexual revolutionaries.  For example, lesbians who want to go to the bathroom without being confronted by men pretending to be women are crying foul, while many homosexual activists proclaim that it's simply wrong to convince kindergartners they're the opposite gender.

-- From "Change.org Petition Wants to Take the T Out of LGBT" by Tim Murphy, New York Magazine 11/11/15

In many ways, this has been an encouragingly fast-moving year in terms of recognition for the transgender community, from Caitlyn Jenner to the recent decision by Governor Cuomo to extend legal protections statewide in New York. But the community is facing backlash, too, from feminists like Germaine Greer's not-"real women" commentary to Houston voters, who struck down a 2014 LGBT anti-discrimination law . . . And now a small number of gay people want to end common cause with them, too, putting up a Change.org petition demanding that several important LGBT (lesbian, gay, bisexual, and transgender) rights organizations remove the T from their missions.

Why undo such a long-standing coalition? "We feel their ideology is not only completely different from that promoted by the LGB community (LGB is about sexual orientation, trans is about gender identity)," reads the anonymous petition, "but is ultimately regressive and actually hostile to the goals of women and gay men."

After the "I Am Cait" star gave a speech during a luncheon in Chicago, Illinois on Thursday, she was confronted by protesters outside the venue. Caitlyn spoke to a group of 1,000 people at the 7th annual Speaker Series luncheon for the Chicago House, which provides social services for those impacted by HIV/AIDS and other LGBT issues.

. . . not all women have vaginas or vulva . . . [Caitlyn/Bruce Jenner claims to be woman, but still has "her" penis.]

We have made great progress over the past decade decoupling gender identity from genitalia. On the one hand, it's easy, because gender identity is a brain function and genitalia are just genitals. On the other hand, trying to teach a society that has been raised for generations (millennia, actually) to believe that sex is nothing more than genitals, is extremely difficult. Because we have been successful, we have put ourselves in the unenviable but unavoidable position of dealing with bathroom panic attacks that stem from fears of male genitals.

Not that long ago trans women were assumed to have undergone genital reconstruction. No more penis, therefore, no threat that the male weapon would be used for predation, a fear that underlies transphobia. Not that there weren't many trans women who could not afford bottom surgery, or for whom it was medically contraindicated, or who just didn't care, but the cisgender [normal] population viewed trans women as postoperative trans women. As the decoupling began, initially targeted to include trans men rather than non-operative trans women, it became obvious to more non-trans persons, as an unintended consequence, that some trans women still had their penises, and that propelled the bathroom panic forward.

Politically speaking and being hard-nosed and practical, I will say that trans persons have no right to demand that language be changed to include them while alienating the vast majority in the process. . . .

From "Gay man attempts explaining his 'Drop The T in LGBTQ' petition" posted at LGBTQ Nation 11/10/15

Gay/bisexual men and women just ARE — we don’t need medicine or surgery to help us become who we believe we are, which is the case with the trans community.

To take it further, the first is about sexual and affectional orientation, who we are sexually attracted to and who we choose to share our love with; the latter is about gender identity, and altering one’s body to fit what one’s mind believes it should resemble. They are two very, very different ideas, and the problem that develops when we are all under the same umbrella is that so many of our enemies see us as one and the same….

To me, the LGB movement, with its celebration of all types of gay men and women, such as bears, leather daddies, drag queens, diesel dykes, lipstick lesbians, etc., has always been about expanding and re-defining concepts of gender; the trans movement, on the other hand, appears to be about re-asserting and codifying traditional concepts of gender.

From "The Rise of the Gay Bigot" by Kit Williamson, Advocate 11/13/15

Over the past few years, as we’ve seen such rapid, astonishing progress towards LGBT equality . . . Lately I’ve been struggling to understand why gay men feel so entitled to tell others how to behave, when so many people are of the opinion that we are societal deviants, no matter how well-behaved we are. Why are so many of us adopting the very same kind of oppressive language that has been wielded against us by antigay extremists?

It’s surprising how many gay men consider themselves arbiters of social norms and mores, as same-sex marriage has only held majority support in this country for a few years now. And that majority is still very slim . . . It is a particularly galling feat of hypocrisy for gay men, who have been on the outskirts of acceptable society for such a long time, to turn around and assert their role as gatekeepers so soon after achieving “respectability.”

There’s an audible “I got mine” mentality in [the “Drop the T” movement] that repulses me. Yes, I’ve seen exclusionary language from trans activists as well, and comments that seem homophobic or misogynistic, but it’s all symptomatic of the same problem.

Why should your opinion of what is the “correct” way to express gender, gender identity, sexuality, or religion become a mandate for others? . . .

Yes, the pendulum sometimes swings too far in the other direction; liberals can be bigots too. . . . I believe we can be sensitive and understanding of the experience of others without pushing political correctness so far that it becomes tyrannical and obscene. There is an obvious middle road we can take here.

. . . we need to be careful not to turn our passion and vehemence against one another; together we will all rise up, but divided we will all fall right back down to where we started.

Most Liberals Say American Morals Getting Worse

According to a new Gallup poll, the vast majority of Americans believe that "the state of moral values in the country as a whole is getting worse," including self-identified social liberals, who had thought just the opposite the year after Barack Obama was elected president.

-- From "Majority in US still say moral values decaying: poll" posted at Global Times 6/8/15

According to Gallup's annual Values and Beliefs poll released recently, 72 percent of Americans continue to believe that the state of moral values in the United States is "getting worse," while only 22 percent show certain optimism.

Apart from the their perception of the direction in which morals are headed, 45 percent of Americans call the current state of moral values in the country as "poor," with less than one in five rating the state of values as either "excellent" or "good."

Americans' pessimistic views about the nation's state of moral values reflect a belief that there is a deteriorating collective moral character, the poll said . . .

From "Most Americans Think Our Morals Are Going To Hell" by Millie Dent, The Fiscal Times 6/3/15

Unsurprisingly perhaps, social conservatives have consistently been most likely to tell pollsters that the nation’s moral values are deteriorating, but the latest Gallup findings showed an uptick from 2014 to 2015 among social moderates and social liberals who believe moral values are regressing.

Gallup also found that Americans’ views of the moral acceptability of a number of key issues has been shifting to the left since 2001. The largest shift was on gay or lesbian relations, with a 23 percentage point increase in the share of people who say that behavior is morally acceptable. The change coincides with a sharp increase in support for same-sex marriage.

Sex between unmarried people has also become more acceptable, as has having babies outside of marriage. Polygamy and divorce are also now acceptable to a greater portion of the population than in 2001. On the other hand, the views of married men and women having an affair haven’t changed much, with just 8 percent of Americans saying it’s morally tolerable.

In two separate surveys conducted during the week of May 6-10, Americans were asked to comment on social issues and morality in the U.S.

According to the first survey, “Values and Beliefs,” Gallup reports that “89% of Americans believe that birth control is morally acceptable, 63% believe that gay or lesbian relations are morally acceptable, 56% believe that doctor-assisted suicide is morally acceptable, and 45% believe that abortion is morally acceptable.”

Even previously taboo behaviors, such as suicide, polygamy, and cloning human beings, have become more socially acceptable in recent years, Gallup reports.

From "Majority in U.S. Still Say Moral Values Getting Worse" by Justin McCarthy, Gallup 6/2/15

Across most demographic groups, clear majorities of Americans have consistently said the country's morals are deteriorating. . . . with upward of 80% of social conservatives consistently saying the state of morals is getting worse. . . . But social liberals [briefly] turned sharply less negative upon Democratic President Barack Obama's taking office in 2009, while social conservatives' views have changed little since 2004.

Social conservatives tend to be the most likely to describe the state of U.S. values as poor. This view has increased from as low as 42% in 2003 to a high of 63% in 2013. Currently, 57% of social conservatives say the state of moral values is poor. Social moderates, too, have increased in this view over time, reaching a new high this year of 46% -- up from a low of 31% in 2003.

Social liberals, meanwhile, have had less movement in their views of the U.S. being in a state of poor moral values, ranging from a low of 26% in 2011 and 2013 to a high of 36% in 2006 . . .

Atheists' Sanctuary City Created: Madison, Wisc.

The liberal stronghold of Madison, Wisconsin has become the first city in the nation to recognize the nonreligious as a protected class of citizens.  The Madison-based Freedom From Religion Foundation (FFRF), along with other atheists, spoke at the city council in favor of the proposed ordinance, but not a single citizen spoke in opposition; the ordinance passed unanimously.
"This is important because I believe it is only fair that if we protect religion, in all its varieties, we should also protect nonreligion from discrimination. It's only fair."

“It was something I’ve been thinking about for quite a while,” Weier said. “I’m not running for reelection, so it’s something that I wanted to get passed before I left office. Anyone who was seeking reelection might not have introduced it.”

The ban was added to an existing equal-opportunity ordinance, which protects people from discrimination based on a list of factors, including race, gender, sexual orientation and gender identity. The March 31 vote added the phrase “religion or non-religion” to the ordinance, which applies to employment, housing and public accommodations.

Although the Constitution prohibits government office seekers from a religious litmus test, people who don’t believe in God are banned from office in six southern states and Maryland. Non-believers say they frequently face discrimination, and a 2012 Gallup poll found that Americans are more likely to vote for gays or Muslims than atheists.

They told the council stories of housing, employment, volunteer, community, and parental custody discrimination because of their non-belief in God, saying that fact has no bearing on their character, values or what type of job they do.

"Having it on the books, where we're legally a protected class, that'll make things much easier for atheists," Calvey said. "And we'll be able to be confident that at least if we're honest about what we actually believe, then we have the law backing us up so we can't legally be discriminated against."

[Bart Campolo, 51,] the onetime United Methodist youth minister, who worked for decades with the poor in inner-city neighborhoods in Philadelphia and Cincinnati, figured he'd try to keep doing that by presiding over what he cheerfully calls "a church for people who don't believe in God."

USC already had more than 50 religious leaders ministering to students of various faiths, said Varun Soni, dean of the school's Office of Religious Life. So it seemed only right, he added, to bring one in for non-believers seeking spiritual guidance.

"Spirituality is really engaged with the ultimate questions that make us human. The questions of meaning and purpose, of significance and authenticity," Soni said. Obama Floods Gay Agenda with Taxpayers' Money

Increasingly, the Obama administration appears to be "all gay, all day."  Government spending watchdog organizations are continually uncovering federal programs that specifically target spending on pet projects of homosexualists — one of the largest funding sources of liberal politicians.
The Washington Free Beacon lists $39,643,352 of questionable research by the National Institutes of Health (NIH), including $2,364,521 in smoking cessation studies specifically for the LGBT community.

-- From "Feds Spent $432,000 Studying Gay Hookup Apps" by Elizabeth Harrington, Washington Free Beacon 1/22/15

The government awarded $432,000 to Columbia University to interview gay men who use GPS dating apps [such as Grindr] and determine whether it increases their likelihood of engaging in risky sexual behavior.

“Smartphone technologies have provided a new venue for sexual partnering among men who have sex with men (MSM),” the grant for the project states. “Indeed, there are a rapidly growing number of smartphone applications designed to facilitate sexual partnering among MSM.”

“Furthermore, given the expediency with which men are able to arrange sexual encounters using these applications, there is cause to question if, when, and how sexual negotiation and serostatus disclosure occurs,” the grant said. “The overall study goal is to understand how sexual risk behaviors among MSM may be facilitated by the nature of GPS-enabled smartphone applications, the way they are used, and the process by which sexual partnering occurs via smartphone applications.”

The project is also studying the sexual arousal level of gay men when using the apps.

From "NIH Grant: $435,369 to Study ‘Culturally Targeted’ Ways to Help LGBT Smokers Quit" by Melanie Hunter, CNSNews.com 2/6/15

“Our long-term goals are to increase smoking cessation in Lesbian, gay, bisexual and transgender (LGBT) smokers and to understand the processes related to cessation and relapse in this underserved population,” the [National Institutes of Health] grant stated.

The study will be conducted in two phases “to compare the efficacy of a culturally targeted intervention versus a non-targeted intervention on smoking cessation outcomes in LGBT smokers.”

In the first phase, researchers will use “focus groups and a pilot trial to establish the cultural appropriateness and acceptability of the targeted elements of the intervention.”

The second phase involves “a randomized smoking cessation trial to compare for the first time the efficacy of the American Lung Association’s Freedom from Smoking Program’ (ALA-FFS), Culturally targeted (ALA-CT) and Non-Targeted (Standard ALA-FFS) to LGBT smokers.”

From "$661,858 Federal Study: Will 'Rapid HIV Home Test' Reduce HIV Infection Among Gays?" by Melanie Hunter, CNSNews.com 1/13/15

The National Institutes of Health has awarded $661,858 to the New York State Psychiatric Institute to study whether the use of rapid home HIV tests will reduce sexual risk behavior in “men who have sex with men” and “transgender women.”

“This study focuses on HIV-uninfected men and transgender women who have sex with men, with special emphasis on ethnic minority individuals, who have more than one sexual partner and never or seldom use condoms,” the grant said.

“Statistics about HIV among male-to-female transgender women (TGW) are often unavailable but it is known that HIV prevalence in this population is high, and the 2011 Institute of Medicine Consensus Report called for much needed research among transgender populations,” the grant said.

“Alternatives to condom use are needed for individuals who cannot or will not use condoms,” it said.

“This 5-year randomized controlled trial will target mainly, but not exclusively, ethnic minority men and TGW who have sex with men, are HIV-uninfected and non-monogamous, never or seldom use condoms, and have a history of serodiscordant UAI,” the grant said.

Serodiscordant UAI is when one partner is infected with HIV and the other is not.

“We have a special housing unit in the Los Angeles area dedicated to the gay, bisexual and transgender detainees,” said Kevin Landy, assistant director of the ICE [U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement] office of detention policy and planning.

“Individuals who prefer a transfer even across the country to that facility for their safety rather than being in a general population housing unit are afforded that opportunity, and we have transferred many people long distances at their choice to that unit,” he said.

“And we have an ongoing working group in this area to consider additional reforms on these issues, including adopting the most progressive policies,” Landy said. “There are a couple of jails in the entire country that have essentially transgender committees.”

When transgender detainees are taken into custody, they are assessed individually, and decisions about how the individual will be classified and where the individual will be placed “may not be based solely on the biological anatomy of that individual,” Landy said.

According to Commission Chairman Martin Castro, the Department of Homeland Security is the “largest agency that has custody of transgender individuals.”

“Transgender detainees who were already receiving hormone therapy when taken into ICE custody shall have continued access,” the report said. “All transgender detainees shall have access to mental health care, and other transgender-related health care and medication based on medical need. From "$39,643,352 Worth of NIH Funding That Could Have Gone to the Ebola Vaccine" by Elizabeth Harrington, Washington Free Beacon 10/16/14

Millions have gone to “text message interventions,” including . . . texting older African Americans with HIV ($372,460), HIV and drug users in rural areas ($693,000), HIV smokers ($763,519), pregnant smokers ($380,145), teen moms ($243,839), and meth addicts ($360,113). Text message interventions to try to get obese people to lose weight have cost $2,707,067.

Sexual minorities have received a substantial amount from the NIH. The agency has now spent $105,066 following 16 schizophrenic LGBT Canadians around Toronto for a study on their community experiences.

The total for a project on why gay men get syphilis in Peru is now $692,697 after receiving additional $228,425 this year. The NIH is also concerned about postpartum depression in “invisible sexual minority women,” with a study that has cost $718,770.

Millions went to develop “origami condoms,” in male, female, and anal versions. The inventor Danny Resnic, who received $2,466,482 from the NIH, has been accused of massive fraud for using grant money for full-body plastic surgery in Costa Rica and parties at the Playboy mansion.

How transwomen use Facebook is the subject of another NIH study worth $194,788.

The Culture War is Over! Liberals Declare Victory

As American public opinion shifts to the right, the liberal media has launched its latest battle tactic in the Culture War: Announce loudly that the Democrats have won the war!  Such propaganda could be effective because the Republicans are pretending that there is no Culture War, withdrawing from the conflict.

-- From "Democrats Put Cultural Issues in Their Quiver" by Jonathan Martin, New York Times 9/15/14

After a generation of campaigns in which Republicans exploited wedge issues to win close elections, Democrats are now on the offensive in the culture wars.

Democrats see social issues as potent for the same reasons Republicans once did, using them as a tool to both stoke concerns among moderate voters, especially women, and motivate their base.

. . . there is little indication so far that the Democrats’ push on social issues is motivating cultural conservatives to respond.

Some Republicans believe that the Democrats’ reliance on cultural issues in politically moderate states underlines the structural challenges that Republicans face with voters.

An electorate reshaped by a growing presence of liberal millennials, minorities, and a secular, unmarried and educated white voting bloc will most likely force Republicans to recalibrate.

From "Why Democrats Are So Confident" by Ronald Brownstein, posted at National Journal 7/2/14

While Republicans took the offense on most cultural arguments through the late 20th century, now Democrats from Obama on down are mostly pressing these issues, confident that they represent an expanding majority of public opinion.

Beyond contraception and immigration, the parties are escalating their conflicts over a broad suite of issues that divide the electorate along cultural lines, including gun control, gay rights, abortion, and climate change (which politically pivots on trust in science). Combined, these confrontations are stamping the GOP as what I've called a "Coalition of Restoration" primarily representing older, white, religiously devout, and nonurban voters who fear that hurtling change is undermining traditional American values. Democrats in turn are championing a younger, more urbanized, diverse, and secular "Coalition of Transformation" that welcomes the evolution in America's racial composition and cultural mores.

Reversing their frequent ambivalence after the 1960s, Democrats are now following their president [Obama] into an unswerving embrace of cultural and demographic change. That shift reverberates through Obama's defiant recent pledges to act unilaterally if necessary to ensure equal workplace treatment of gays, protect undocumented immigrants, confront climate change, and overcome the Hobby Lobby decision allowing religious-based private companies to exclude contraception from their health insurance plans.

From "Morning Plum: Are Dems now winning the culture wars?" by Greg Sargent, Washington Post 9/16/14

In multiple Senate races, Democrats are hammering Republican candidates over contraception and “Personhood,” a development that many observers interpret as a sign that Dems are now the ones on offense in the culture wars.

A new ad blitz from Karl Rove’s Crossroads GPS nicely captures the emerging dynamic. Colorado GOP Senate candidate Cory Gardner has been treated to the most direct and sustained assault over Personhood of any GOP candidate, and a new Crossroads ad appears designed to defend Gardner against it with an appeal to female voters.

Yet the ad does this only by changing the subject. . . . The ad never mentions Personhood or contraception. Instead, it obliquely refers to Dem attacks as “political scare tactics,” even as the featured women declare they want “a real conversation about issues that matter,” such as the economy. But, as Rebecca Berg writes, this ad actually “underscores the challenge Republicans have faced this year appealing to women voters.”

From "Oral Contraceptive Republicans" by George Neumayr, The American Spectator 9/10/14

The Left’s relentless “war on women” campaign is producing some odd results, one of which is the emergence of Republicans who champion over-the-counter contraceptives. . . .

It is a measure of the Left’s progress in the culture war that the architect of Republican support for over-the-counter contraceptives is a Catholic, Louisiana Governor Bobby Jindal, who in 2012 wrote a Wall Street Journal op-ed in favor it. According to Time, “Jindal’s political aides, and many GOP operatives, believe birth control is a gateway issue for women voters. While the politics of abortion have remained consistently split, Republicans fear being cast as anti-birth control could cost them a generation of women voters. ‘It’s often an immediate shutdown,’ said one Jindal aide.”

The Left should rejoice that “socially conservative” Catholics like Jindal have become enthusiasts for a position Catholic teaching regards as sinful. This will make it even easier for the Left to dismiss the Church’s stance as too “irrational” to warrant religious-freedom protection. It is hard to imagine Republicans who favor over-the-counter contraceptives serving as reliable defenders of the Church’s religious freedom over time. If Obama’s original contraceptive mandate became overwhelmingly popular, wouldn’t they end up supporting that too in the name of retaining women voters?

From "The Culture Wars, Then and Now" by Daniel J. Solomon, The Harvard Crimson 9/15/14

How did the left win the culture wars? That answer depends on how much thoughtfulness we impute to the American electorate. Often, when voters sour on the specific policies of Republicans or Democrats, they move away from the party as a whole. Barack Obama’s first presidential campaign, for example, turned on economic questions, but he gained his initial following thanks to his timely denunciations of the Iraq war. The polling data suggests as much. Between 2005 and 2008, the decline in President Bush’s approval rating—which fell as the news from Iraq grew grimmer—was correlated with a rise in public support for the social acceptance of homosexuality.

Abortion Advocate Extinction: They Don't Procreate

A prestigious study from Northwestern University comparing the birth rates of abortion advocates to the rest of Americans concludes that the shift in public opinion from pro-choice to pro-life since Roe v. Wade is the result of a demographic shift:  Pro-abortion women don't have as many children, or perhaps none. (dah!)

For background, read New York City Liberals Choose Abortion NOT Procreation and also read Liberals Ask Themselves, "Why Don't Liberals Procreate?"

-- From "Big pro-life families are shifting the abortion debate" by Kevin Lewis, Boston Globe Correspondent 8/10/14

Although prochoice views became more common from the 1960s through the 1980s, the trend seems to have reached a plateau and maybe even reversed in the last two decades, especially among the younger generation, despite liberalizing attitudes towards other social issues. Sociologists at Northwestern University are proposing that this is at least partly the result of prochoice individuals having fewer offspring, which, given that offspring tend to adopt their parents’ attitudes, leaves fewer prochoice individuals in the next generation.

From "Demographic Determinants of Trends in Public Opinion about Abortion in the United States" by J. Alex Kevern & Jeremy Freese, Northwestern University July 2014

Using the General Social Survey, we consider the relationship between population demographic trends and trends in abortion attitudes. After an initial period of liberalizing attitudes, the United States population’s attitudes toward abortion have been mostly stable over the past two decades, or even more conservative. Cohort replacement explains most of this pattern, and our paper explores the role of differential fertility in changes in how population support for abortion rights has been affected by cohort replacement. Opponents of abortion rights maintain considerably higher fertility than their pro-choice counterparts, and elsewhere abortion attitudes have been shown to have a high parent child correlation. We apply these two pieces of evidence to help explain the mitigation of the upward trend toward pro-choice beliefs in GSS data from 1976-2010. We also find evidence that fertility differential between pro-life and pro-choice individuals has grown, despite declining fertility for both groups. We are currently working to quantify more precisely how strong the force of differential fertility is on abortion attitudes, and what kinds of population dynamics may amplify or attenuate its effects.

. . . Over the 34 years of GSS data, “pro-life” individuals have had on average 27% more children than “pro-choice” individuals over the past 34 years. This cannot be explained simply by a broader trend toward higher fertility among those who are more politically conservative . . .

. . . Further investigation indicates that not only are abortion attitudes associated with fertility associated with abortion attitudes, but in proportional terms—which is what matters for cultural evolution—the gap is widening. Fertility has declined for both groups over the past 30 years, but fertility has declined far less markedly for pro life individuals. . . .

Liberals v Supreme Court Religious Liberty Rulings

The United States Supreme Court has issued its 5-4 ruling in the case of Burwell v. Hobby Lobby Stores, Inc. that pitted the Obama Administration against closely-held corporations that did not wish to violate the religious beliefs of their owners by providing abortifacient contraceptives.

In short, in an opinion read aloud by Justice Alito, the Supreme Court sided with religious liberty and ruled that closely-held corporations can be considered persons under the Religious Freedom Restoration Act [RFRA], and cannot be coerced by the federal government into act that violate the religious beliefs of the corporation’s owners.

From "Supreme Court rules against Obama in contraception case" by Bill Mears and Tom Cohen, CNN 6/30/14

[The Supreme Court ruling] set off a frenzied partisan debate over religious and reproductive rights that will continue through the November congressional elections and beyond.

The four liberal justices appointed by Democratic presidents, including the high court's three women, opposed the ruling as a possible gateway to further religious-based challenges that limit individual choice and rights.

. . . the issue revolved around a 1994 federal law known as the Religious Freedom Restoration Act (RFRA), which Alito's opinion said prevents the government from "taking any action that substantially burdens the exercise of religion unless that action constitutes the least restrictive means of serving a compelling government interest."

Alito wrote that the court's conservative majority rejected the argument by the Department of Health and Human Services that "the owners of the companies forfeited all RFRA protection when they decided to organize their businesses as corporations rather than sole proprietorships or general partnerships."

"The plain terms of RFRA make it perfectly clear that Congress did not discriminate in this way against men and women who wish to run their businesses as for-profit corporations in the manner required by their religious beliefs," he wrote.

. . . many [liberals] worry giving corporations religious freedom rights could affect laws on employment, safety, and civil rights.

From "Religious Liberty Wins in Court" by Grace-Marie Turner, Forbes Contributor 6/30/14

The Supreme Court today rang a victory bell for religious freedom as it ruled 5-4 that “HHS’s contraceptive mandate substantially burdens the exercise of religion” of three closely held companies – Hobby Lobby, Conestoga Wood Specialties, and Mardel.

Supreme Court Justice Samuel Alito, writing for the majority, noted that the companies have “sincere Christian beliefs that life begins at conception and that it would violate their religion to facilitate access to contraceptive drugs or devices that operate after that point.”  The administration had argued that the plaintiffs were for-profit corporations and therefore couldn’t have religious beliefs.

“Protecting the free-exercise rights of closely held corporations…protects the religious liberty of the humans who own and control them,” the court found in citing the Religious Freedom Restoration Act of 1993.

People would be second class citizens if, as owners of corporations, they were not allowed to exercise their religious freedom, Justice Alito said this morning from the bench in announcing the decision.  The court’s decision means that Americans have religious freedom in all aspects of their lives:  If you go into business and start a corporation, you do not lose your rights.

From "A Ruling That Both Sides Can Run With" by Jeremy W. Peters And Michael D. Shear, New York Times 6/30/14

“The court has made clear today that the Obama administration’s assault on religious freedom in this case went too far,” said Gov. Bobby Jindal of Louisiana, one of several conservative Republicans weighing a White House run. “But this assault will not stop in our courts, in our schools and in the halls of power.”

. . . Conservatives have prevailed on legal grounds by making their arguments about the First Amendment. And many Republicans signaled Monday that they would continue to fight Mr. Obama and Democrats on the broader principle of religious freedom.

The narrative that the president and his policies favor the power of the government at the expense of the individual is an especially potent one among conservatives.

Yet even as conservatives celebrated coming out on the winning side of a divisive social issue, their court victory may have also handed Democrats an issue that will turn out liberal voters in the fall.

. . . the principle of religious liberty is being used as a sword by a range of conservative groups currently engaged in an organized effort to discriminate and impose their doctrinal views on a pluralistic nation.

Today’s 5–4 ruling provides clear evidence of how the conservative Roberts Court has misinterpreted the free exercise of religion to the point of absurdity . . .

[It is time] for Americans to consider legislative fixes to the Religious Freedom Restoration Act, or RFRA, and state-based RFRA-like legislation that provides for religious exemptions from generally applicable laws.

Senate Majority Whip Dick Durbin [D-IL] says he’s introducing a bill requiring corporations that are newly exempted from the contraception mandate to disclose their coverage policy to employees and job applicants.

But there were few specifics Monday from Democrats on what other measures would entail, although one senior Senate Democratic aide said a legislative response could come in July or September — right before the midterm elections.

Democrats don’t appear to see many political downsides to taking on the decision. The Democratic Senatorial Campaign Committee sent out an email shortly after the ruling fundraising off it, and several vulnerable red-state Democrats up for reelection were quick to criticize the decision, even though they’re typically reluctant to talk about other parts of the health care law.

From "Hillary Clinton blasts Hobby Lobby ruling" by Katie Glueck, Politico 6/30/14

“It’s the first time that our court has said that a closely held corporation has the rights of a person when it comes to religious freedom, which means the corporation’s … [‘closely held’] employers can impose their religious beliefs on their employees, and, of course, denying women the right to contraceptives as part of a health care plan is exactly that,” she said. “I find it deeply disturbing that we are going in that direction.”

. . . she argued that the Hobby Lobby decision is a setback for women’s rights, and at one point called it a step toward a “really bad slippery slope,” noting that some employers don’t believe in, for example, blood transfusions.

Asked about a measure [RFRA] signed by her husband, former President Bill Clinton, tied to protecting religious beliefs under federal law, Clinton said it was authorized “because, at that point, there were legitimate cases of discrimination against religions. The people who wanted to build a church, or a synagogue, or a mosque in a community and they fit into the zoning, but the community was saying, ‘We don’t want one of those in our community’.”

From "Supreme Court's Hobby Lobby Ruling Ignites Debate Over Religious-Freedom Law" by Kristina Peterson, Wall Street Journal 6/30/14

The high court's decision in the Hobby Lobby case refocused attention on the Religious Freedom Restoration Act that passed Congress overwhelmingly in 1993, with the support of some lawmakers still serving in both the House and Senate. The statute requires federal laws to accommodate individuals' religious beliefs unless there is a compelling interest at stake that can't be attained through other means.

Sen. Orrin Hatch of Utah, the lead Republican sponsor of the religious-freedom law when it passed the Senate in a 97-3 vote, said Monday's decision affirmed Congress' decision to pass the law in the first place.

"As the Supreme Court rightfully said today, the Religious Freedom Restoration Act could not have been clearer in saying religious liberty of all Americans must be equally protected and not unnecessarily burdened," Mr. Hatch said in a statement. "That's why RFRA passed Congress overwhelmingly more than 20 years ago."

The bill passed the House on a voice vote and was signed into law by President Bill Clinton.

-- From "Obama urges national commitment to help boys of color" by Tom Cohen, CNN 5/30/14

It is a stark and sobering fact of American life in the 21st century -- black, Hispanic and Native American boys and young men are less likely to graduate, stay out of jail and get a job than those who are white.

Chances are greater they'll grow up with a single parent or none at all, won't read well, and will get suspended or expelled from school or just drop out.

Saddest of all, such statistics aren't new or particularly shocking in a society that has come to expect such class, racial and ethnic disparities.

President Barack Obama launched his "My Brother's Keeper" initiative three months ago to focus on solutions to such chronic and deep-rooted social ills. The initiative included a task force to examine the issue, and an invitation for businesses and foundations to help out.

From "Obama’s My Brother’s Keeper initiative takes crucial next step" by Trymaine Lee, MSNBC 5/30/14

During an emotional speech at the White House, delivered before a backdrop of young black and Latino men from Obama’s hometown of Chicago, the president implored Americans of all colors to shake their complacency over the dire outcomes of minority men and help provide them pathways to success.

This morning, the task force released its first report to the president, in which they outline a broad set of guiding principles and recommendations. The recommendations include launching a national mentor-recruiting campaign, eliminating suspensions and expulsions of preschoolers, encouraging a culture of reading at home and growing youth summer programs and pre-apprenticeships.

The initiative calls on filling the gaps for young men of color at critical times in their lives, including early education, when these boys often fall behind in literacy and math. The task force recommends universal access to high-quality early childhood care and education, saying, “pre-school for all is a vital component to the administration’s so-called ‘opportunity agenda.’” And later, as students prepare to graduate from high school, that students are college-ready. But even further, the task force suggests helping these young people through college with stronger college counselors and, after graduation, expanded access to mentorship programs and internships. It’s what the task force describes as a “cradle-to-college-and-career approach.” (emphasis added)

. . . Boys of color are too often born into poverty and live with a single parent. . . . Too many of these boys and young men will have negative interactions with the juvenile and criminal justice system, and the dream of a college education is within grasp for too few.

. . . Today, the President met with his Cabinet to discuss the Task Force’s initial assessments and recommendations and the President called on the American people to get engaged through mentorship opportunities nationwide.

It is important that all children have caring adults who are engaged in their lives.  But too many young people lack this support.  For example, roughly two-thirds of Black and one-third of Hispanic children live with only one parent.   Moreover, research suggests that a father's absence increases the risk of his child dropping out of school among Blacks and Hispanics by 75 percent and 96 percent respectively.  We see significant high school dropout rates—as high as 50 percent in some school districts—including among boys and young men from certain Southeast Asian and Pacific Islander populations. And some 27 percent of American Indians and Alaska Natives live in poverty, compared to 11.6% of White Americans.

The President is calling on Americans interested in getting involved in My Brother’s Keeper to sign up as long-term mentors to young people . . .
