IL Civil Unions Law, so Now to "Gay Marriage"

Now that newly elected Democrat Gov. Quinn successfully "twisted arms" in the legislature to pass the Civil Unions SB1716, against the will of the Illinois citizens whom they represent, the chant has begun to enact full-blown same-sex "marriage."

Illinois lawmakers on Wednesday approved legislation allowing civil unions in this state, and the governor has indicated he will sign it, making Illinois one of only a handful of states to grant to same-sex couples a broad array of legal rights and responsibilities similar to those of marriage.

Opponents complained about the timing of the vote (during a fall session before newly elected legislators arrive) and said they feared civil union legislation might ultimately harm the institution of marriage. “This will be the entry to a slippery slope,” Ron Stephens, a Republican state representative, said. “The next thing we’ll see will be consideration of gay marriage.”

In Illinois, where Democrats dominate both state legislative chambers (and will next year, even after new lawmakers are seated) the votes were split: 32 to 24 in the State Senate [vote tally .PDF here] on Wednesday, and 61 to 52 in the House a day earlier [vote tally .PDF here].

Supporters of gay rights widely praised Illinois’s decision, but many said the eventual goal remained legalizing same-sex marriage, not a separate civil union system.

After a historic vote legalizing civil unions this week, Mayor Daley on Thursday welcomed the Illinois General Assembly into “this new century” and urged lawmakers to “move faster” — and legalize gay marriage.

“Finally, they realized they should have the same rights under state law. But eventually, [gay] marriage will take place. It has to. . . . We have to move faster,” the mayor said.

“These are great citizens. They’re a tremendous resource for us in our great city. I’m very proud of the relationship that I had with them over many years. And it’s really important for us to move forward. These are people [who] have families. These are people [who] work in every sector of our society. They should not be discriminated against in any way whatsoever,” he said.

Proposed Chicago High School Not Gay Enough

Designers of a plan to create the city's first gay-friendly high school pulled the plug on a watered-down version of the plan Tuesday but vowed to resurrect the idea next year.

Some lead members of the design team had thought that the latest version of the proposal -- which deleted all specific references to gay students from the mission statement and changed the school's name -- had been the best way to garner support for the new school, Chicago public school officials said. But on Tuesday, other members balked.

"When we tried to compromise as much as we could with our language, even changing our name, in the end, the design team couldn't fully agree that this proposal should go through," one team member, Katherine Hogan, told WTTW-Channel 11's "Chicago Tonight" Tuesday.

Hogan, a literature teacher at Social Justice High School, insisted the design team had the "full support" of Schools CEO Arne Duncan and would "absolutely" submit an "even stronger" version of the plan next year, in time for the school to open in 2010, as planned.

Mayor Daley Dedicates $65 mil Center for Gays, Lesbians, and Cross-Dressers

Mayor Richard M. Daley was scheduled to cut the ribbon on a new, state of the art facility for the gay and lesbian community Tuesday. CBS 2’s Joanie Lum got a first look at the modern, multi-million dollar facility.

If the new Center on Halsted, at 3656 N. Halsted St., seems expansive, it’s because everyone is accepted here, gay or straight. The 65,000-square-foot building is the most comprehensive facility in the country supporting lesbian, gay, bisexual and transgender people, also known as the LGBT community.

The center offers classes, therapy and advice on how to deal with discrimination.

Fabulous. Classes in how sue anyone who objects to your behavior...

The faculty also has plenty of room for fun – from the full size gym named after tennis great Billie Jean King to the Richard M. Daley roof garden.

"We have screens that drop down for movie night or Monday night football,” he said.

And there’s a 170-seat theater, fully outfitted.

When it’s finished, they hope their big green open lobby will be a social gathering place for anyone who wants to learn about the LGBT community and what is offered here at Center on Halsted.

In other words, Mayor Daley has officially endorsed a $65 million monument dedicated to affirming homosexual behavior and cross-dressing.

I've got a few questions:

1. Who is paying for all this? (Of course this is merely a rhetorical question. We all know...)

2. Why is Roman Catholic mayor publicly encouraging behavior that God has condemned?

3. Will Mayor Daley still receive Communion this Sunday OR will he receive church discipline, as he should?

If you are a faithful Catholic, please contact Cardinal George and respectfully encourage him to stand up for righteousness and be a "teacher, leader, and pastor" (as he is described on the archdiocese website) by calling the mayor to account.
