God Leading Rick Perry to Presidency, Says Wife

Gov. Rick Perry's wife Anita told him that she and other Christians have recognized that God has called him to run for president and that he is being brutalized by political opponents and the media so that God's will is clear once he's elected.

Anita Perry pointed the finger at fellow Republicans, who she said took issue with the governor's strong conservative Christian stance.

"We are being brutalized by our opponents, and our own party," Perry said. "So much of that is, I think they look at him, because of his faith. He is the only true conservative – well, there are some conservatives. And they're there for good reasons. And they may feel like God called them too. But I truly feel like we are here for that purpose."

Perry grew teary when relating stories from her childhood, saying her father was a deacon at a local church and that she never missed Sunday school as a girl.

She said Perry relied on prayer when deciding whether or not to enter the GOP race.

Anita Perry said that God had called her husband to run for president and likened the decision to encountering “a burning bush.” She said that God was testing Perry with his current difficulties.

Perry has credited his wife with encouraging him to run for president and has said he was called to run, but he stopped short of saying that God called him.

In an emotional recounting of the Texas governor’s decision to run for president, Anita Perry said the Lord spoke to her before persuading her husband to run.

“God was already speaking to me but he (Rick) didn’t want to hear it,” she told the sympathetic audience. “I said you may not see that burning bush, but there are people seeing that burning bush for you.”

Anita Perry told about 20 people gathered for eggs, bacon and cheese grits at the Baptist college in northern Greenville County how a person came up to her husband on the campaign trail last week, handed him a Bible verse and said, “God is testing you right now. God is testing you because He wants you to know when you are in the White House how you got there.”

Asked later by a reporter if she believed the message, Anita Perry said, “Absolutely.”

She also told the audience that her husband “really prayed about it” before deciding to enter the GOP contest.

“He threw that fleece out there twice,” she told the Baptists, referring to the method Gideon used in the Old Testament to determine God’s will.

From "Anita Perry, Rick Perry and that biblical fleece -- explained" by Tami Dennis, Los Angeles Times 10/14/11

. . . In the biblical chapter Judges, an angel has appeared to Gideon, telling him to head off to battle and save the Israelites. The Israelites, it should be pointed out, have been behaving badly and have gotten themselves into considerable trouble.

Not being a rash man, Gideon wants to make quite sure that God will grant him victory. (The parallels are not coincidence -- hence, one would assume, Anita Perry's point.)

As for that burning bush -- Moses, remember? If you don't, and you follow politics, you might want to consider bookmarking those Bible sites. Election day is still a long way off.
