Obama's NASA Ignores God's Creation: Apollo 8 1968

On Christmas Eve in 1968, all three astronauts aboard America's Apollo 8 spacecraft broadcast to the world the biblical account of God's creation of the earth by reading from Genesis.  Just hours earlier, God provided these men a glimpse of the earth never before witnessed by mankind. This week, NASA released a brief documentary video of "Earthrise" on this 45th anniversary of the event -- absent God and the Bible.
"Oh my God, look at that picture over there!  There's the Earth comin' up. Wow, is that pretty!"
-- Astronaut William Anders
The heavens declare the glory of God, and the sky above proclaims his handiwork. [Psalm 19:1 ESV]
For what can be known about God is plain to them, because God has shown it to them. For his invisible attributes, namely, his eternal power and divine nature, have been clearly perceived, ever since the creation of the world, in the things that have been made.
[Romans 1:19-20a ESV]

An Apollo 8 astronaut who was among the first to orbit the moon is set to help re-enact the 1968 Christmastime broadcast from space.

Millions tuned in on Dec. 24, 1968, when Commander Frank Borman, Bill Anders and James Lovell took turns reading from the Book of Genesis as the Apollo 8 orbited the moon.

Lovell is expected to attend Monday’s event at Chicago’s Museum of Science and Industry, where the original Apollo 8 Command Module is.

Lovell took part in several missions, including as pilot in the Gemini 7 flight in 1965, a command module pilot on Apollo 8 and a commander of Apollo 13.

In addition to being the first humans to orbit the moon, the website nasa.gov cited the primary mission was capturing "high-resolution photographs of proposed Apollo landing areas." The first manned lunar landing, Apollo 11, would take place just seven months later.

Among the mission's firsts, according to nasa.gov, are the "first pictures taken by humans of the Earth from deep space, and first live TV coverage of the lunar surface." According to [author of "Genesis," Robert] Zimmerman, Anders also captured a color image of an event never before seen firsthand by man. As the crew flew 70 miles above the moon, Anders grabbed the camera and took the photograph known as "Earthrise."

The U.S. Postal Service would issue the photograph on a six-cent stamp with the words, "In the beginning " The phrase paid homage to the Christmas Eve TV broadcast of the crew reading from the biblical Genesis. Zimmerman wrote that a reporter put the idea of a "Christmas-type gesture from space" into Borman's head.

. . . Frustrated over the lack of a poetic idea to commemorate the birth of Jesus Christ, Borman turned to a friend who called a spokesman for the Bureau of the Budget, Joe Laitin. Zimmerman said Laitin, a reporter who covered the Nuremberg Trials, "got a Gideon Bible that he had once swiped from a hotel." Laitin's wife told him: "If you want poetry you should look in the Old Testament." When Laitin responded he wouldn't know where to begin, Christine Laitin said, "Why don't you begin at the beginning?"

William Anders:
"For all the people on Earth the crew of Apollo 8 has a message we would like to send you".

"In the beginning God created the heaven and the earth.
And the earth was without form, and void; and darkness was upon the face of the deep.
And the Spirit of God moved upon the face of the waters. And God said, Let there be light: and there was light.
And God saw the light, that it was good: and God divided the light from the darkness."
Jim Lovell:
"And God called the light Day, and the darkness he called Night. And the evening and the morning were the first day.
And God said, Let there be a firmament in the midst of the waters, and let it divide the waters from the waters.
And God made the firmament, and divided the waters which were under the firmament from the waters which were above the firmament: and it was so.
And God called the firmament Heaven. And the evening and the morning were the second day."
Frank Borman:
"And God said, Let the waters under the heavens be gathered together unto one place, and let the dry land appear: and it was so.
And God called the dry land Earth; and the gathering together of the waters called he Seas: and God saw that it was good."
Borman then added, "And from the crew of Apollo 8, we close with good night, good luck, a Merry Christmas, and God bless all of you - all of you on the good Earth."

Millions tuned in on Dec. 24, 1968, when Frank Borman, Bill Anders and Lovell circled the moon. A television camera on board took footage of the crater-filled surface as the astronauts read Bible verses describing the creation of Earth. They circled 10 times and began reading from the Book of Genesis on the last orbit.

"It's a foundation of Christianity, Judaism and Islam," Lovell said of choosing Genesis. "It is the foundation of most of the world's religions. ... They all had that basis of the Old Testament."

After the Christmastime broadcast, atheist leader Madalyn Murray O'Hair filed a lawsuit against NASA, alleging First Amendment violations. But the case was dismissed, and the U.S. Supreme Court declined to hear an appeal.

Atheist, NASA Conceal First Communion on Moon

Yesterday, astronaut Buzz Aldrin commemorated his crewmate, Neil Armstrong, at the memorial service for the first man on the moon. Unbeknownst to the world, before Armstrong made the first footprint, he sat quietly in the lunar space module observing Aldrin celebrating the body and blood of Jesus Christ, broadcasting Scripture to earth, which NASA censored.

UPDATE 12/23/13: Obama's NASA Ignores God's Creation: Apollo 8 1968

-- From "Armstrong memorialized in National Cathedral ceremony" by Jessica Wehrman, Washington bureau (Dayton Daily News) 9/13/12

Neil Armstrong, who died Aug. 25 from complications after a cardiovascular procedure, was remembered in a solemn and sometimes emotional service in Washington National Cathedral . . .

Among the notables at the service were legendary astronauts John Glenn and Buzz Aldrin, House Speaker John Boehner, R-West Chester Twp., and Minority Leader Nancy Pelosi, D-Calif., and U.S. Sens. Rob Portman, R-Ohio, and Sherrod Brown, D-Ohio.

From "How Buzz Aldrin's communion on the moon was hushed up" by Matthew Cresswell, The UK Guardian 9/13/12

Before Armstrong and Aldrin stepped out of the lunar module on July 20, 1969, Aldrin unstowed a small plastic container of wine and some bread. He had brought them to the moon from Webster Presbyterian church near Houston, where he was an elder. Aldrin had received permission from the Presbyterian church's general assembly to administer it to himself. In his book Magnificent Desolation he shares the message he then radioed to Nasa: "I would like to request a few moments of silence … and to invite each person listening in, wherever and whomever they may be, to pause for a moment and contemplate the events of the past few hours, and to give thanks in his or her own way."

He also read a section of the gospel of John. During it all, Armstrong, reportedly a deist, is said to have watched respectfully but without making any comment.

The story of the secret communion service only emerged after the mission. Aldrin had originally planned to share the event with the world over the radio. However, at the time Nasa was still reeling from a lawsuit filed by the firebrand atheist Madalyn Murray O'Hair, resulting in the ceremony never being broadcast. The founder of American Atheists and self-titled "most hated woman in America" had taken on Nasa, as well as many other public organisation. Most famously, she successfully fought mandatory school prayer and bible recitation in US public schools.

From "Finding God on the moon" by Josh Graves, FoxNews.com 8/31/12

. . . Aldrin read the words of Jesus, “I am the vine; you are the branches. If a man remains in me and I in him, he will bear much fruit; apart from me you can do nothing.” (Jn. 15:5) He also read Psalm 8: “You have set your glory in the heavens . . . When I consider the heavens, the words of your fingers, the moon and the stars which you have set in place . . . Who are we that you are mindful of us, human beings that you care for us?”

In Aldrin’s own words: “. . . It’s interesting to think that some of the first words spoken on the moon were the words of Jesus Christ, who made the Earth and the moon — and Who, in the immortal words of Dante, is Himself the ‘Love that moves the Sun and other stars.’”

Astronomer: No Intelligent Life Beyond Earth

After analyzing hundreds of planets, Harvard's senior astrophysicist, Dr. Howard Smith has concluded that there is no one beyond our own Earth -- which exists in perfect placement in our Solar System to sustain our lives, unlike any other heavenly body.

Ummm . . . It would seem he's saying that the Earth's perfect existence is not the result of random chance.

-- From "No hope of alien life in space, says US researcher" by The Daily Telegraph 1/25/11

There is no hope of finding alien life in space because conditions on all other 500 planets discovered so far are too hostile, a leading astronomer has claimed.

Dr Howard Smith, a senior astrophysicist at Harvard, said that extreme conditions found so far on planets discovered outside the solar system are likely to be the norm. "Most other planets and solar systems are wildly different from our own," he said.

From "Astronomer discounts chances of alien life" posted at UPI 1/24/11

Smith insists extrasolar planets are too different from our own and even if they did support life it would be impossible for us to contact it.

"Any hope of contact has to be limited to a relatively tiny bubble of space around the Earth, stretching perhaps 1,250 light years out from our planet, where aliens might be able to pick up our signals or send us their own," he says. "But communicating would still take decades or centuries."

From "Alien life deemed impossible by analysis of 500 planets" by Heidi Blake, London Telegraph 1/23/11

[Dr. Smith] pointed to stars such as HD10180, which sparked great excitement when it was found to be orbited by a planet of similar size and appearance to Earth.

But the similarities turned out to be superficial. The planet lies less than two million miles from its sun, meaning it is roasting hot, stripped of its atmosphere and blasted by radiation.

Many of the other planets have highly elliptical orbits which cause huge variations in temperature which prevent water remaining liquid, thus making it impossible for life to develop.

. . . Dr Smith dismissed the claims [of NASA -- see next article below], insisting that other extrasolar planets differ starkly from our own . . .

UPDATE 2/2/11: Media Fanfare for NASA discovering, what might be distant planets, that theoretically could sustain life, but no conclusions are scientifically possible.

From "Astronomers hunting alien Earths" by Dan Vergano, USA TODAY 1/23/11

NASA's Kepler space telescope team this month unveiled the first indisputable detection of a rocky planet spotted in another star's solar system. The find lifted hopes that planets with rocky cores like Earth fill many stars' solar systems. Mission scientists led by William Borucki of NASA's NASA Ames Research Center in Moffett Field, Calif., promise to report on hundreds of more planetary candidates next month.

Dubbed "Kepler-10b," the recently-announced rocky planet roasts in an orbit far too hot for life, circling less than two million miles above its sun-like star. "You have to see this as a warm up for Kepler, literally," says mission team scientist Sara Seager of MIT, however, pointing to expected future finds.

"Although no such planets have yet been discovered, the first will be found within the next couple of years," write astrophysicists Jonti Horner of Australia's University of New South Wales and Barrie Jones of the United Kingdom's Open University in the current Astronomy & Geophysics journal. "And so the time is right to discuss exactly what factors might come together to make such planets more, or less, suitable for life to develop and thrive."

Some caution about planet discoveries might be in order, though. The September announcement of the planet Gliese 581g by a team led by Steven Vogt of the University of California-Santa Cruz and Paul Butler of the Carnegie Institute of Washington (D.C.), has come under fire. Circling just such an M-class dwarf star, the planet was announced as orbiting in a potentially habitable zone. Other astronomers, such as the Geneva Observatory's Francesco Pepe, have since said they couldn't confirm the planet's detection, raising questions about its existence. (Noting that three outside groups have now reported they can't find Gliese 581g, Pepe says in an email, "It turns out today that Vogt's conclusions were wrong.")

UPDATE 2/3/11 (video): PBS report speculates that "odds are" some planet must have life

UPDATE 12/25/14: From "Science Increasingly Makes the Case for God" by Eric Metaxas (author of “Miracles: What They Are, Why They Happen, and How They Can Change Your Life”), posted at Wall Street Journal

Today there are more than 200 known parameters necessary for a planet to support life—every single one of which must be perfectly met, or the whole thing falls apart. . . .

Yet here we are, not only existing, but talking about existing. What can account for it? Can every one of those many parameters have been perfect by accident? At what point is it fair to admit that science suggests that we cannot be the result of random forces? Doesn’t assuming that an intelligence created these perfect conditions require far less faith than believing that a life-sustaining Earth just happened to beat the inconceivable odds to come into being?

Fred Hoyle, the astronomer who coined the term “big bang,” said that his atheism was “greatly shaken” at these developments. He later wrote that “a common-sense interpretation of the facts suggests that a super-intellect has monkeyed with the physics, as well as with chemistry and biology . . . . The numbers one calculates from the facts seem to me so overwhelming as to put this conclusion almost beyond question.”

Theoretical physicist Paul Davies has said that “the appearance of design is overwhelming” and Oxford professor Dr. John Lennox has said “the more we get to know about our universe, the more the hypothesis that there is a Creator . . . gains in credibility as the best explanation of why we are here.”
