Christian Marriage Not Welcome at Stanford Univ.

The Stanford Undergraduate Senate voted to deny funding for the conservative Stanford Anscombe Society (SAS) and the Stanford Graduate Student Council voted 10-2 against a proposed SAS conference titled "Communicating Values: Marriage, Family & the Media" denouncing such a promotion of natural marriage as "hate speech."  Organized homosexualists spoke against the conference asserting that it would be threatening to "the queer population" and increase the student suicide rate.
“A lot of students who are queer come to Stanford because it’s one of the most LGBT-friendly places in the world.  Stanford is supposed to be a safe space for us.”

SAS had sought $600 in honoraria funds from the GSC for conference speakers. However, members of GradQ, the queer graduate student organization, criticized the speaker list–which included Robert Lopez, Kellie Fiedorek and Ryan Anderson–as inappropriately controversial.

As a general fees group, SAS also reached out to the Undergraduate Senate for $5,000 in funding. However, the appropriations committee met with the group on Thursday night and voted not to recommend their funding application.

Despite the lack of funding, SAS’s Communicating Values Conference will still go on, according to [SAS president Judith] Romea. The group will seek funding from local organizations, a process which will be in compliance with University guidelines for event funding.

Stanford Anscombe Society (SAS) is a group that “promotes discussion regarding the roles of the family, marriage, and sexual integrity in the lives of Stanford students both now and after graduation.”

“Communicating values” was created in order to “engage in intellectual and civil discourse about the issues of marriage, family, and sexual integrity,” according to the event description.

Over 100 students, many organized by the queer graduate group GradQ, showed up at the GSC meeting on “Communicating Values” and, according to the minutes of the meeting, decried “Communicating Values” as hateful and even dangerous to LGBT members of the Stanford community.
