When a Catholic student commented that he doesn't accept homosexuality as normal, the teacher expelled him from the classroom, but the public school board said it was the teacher who deserved a suspension.

Michigan high school teacher Jay McDowell says he didn't like where the discussion was going after a student told his classmates he didn't "accept gays."
So McDowell kicked the boy [Daniel Glowacki] out of class for a day.
In return, the teacher was suspended for a day without pay for violating the student's free speech rights.

Howell Public Schools said actions taken by Howell High School economics teacher Jay McDowell Oct. 20 during a heated exchange with two students about gay rights "could be construed as teacher-to-student bullying; ironic of the anti-bullying message of the day."
"Your demonstration of intolerance stands in contradistinction of the anti-bullying message of the day," district officials said in a letter of reprimand to McDowell, released Monday in response to requests made under the Freedom of Information Act.
In disciplinary documents obtained by the Daily Press & Argus on Monday, the district said McDowell initiated the controversy that resulted in a student being ejected from his class Oct. 20.
"You disciplined them in anger under the guise of harassment and bullying because you opposed their religious belief and were offended by it. The students were causing no disruption to the educational process," the reprimand letter states.

The Howell Public Schools district is reaffirming its decision to suspend teacher Jay McDowell for one day, despite threats and much public debate. . . It says McDowell threatened to bring media frenzy on the schools if the discipline decision was not reversed but should it go away, he would not bring attention to the issue. The district says “Mr. McDowell and his supporters have succeeded in painting our school community as bigoted, racist and homophobic, and the media has served as an unwitting partner. What started out as a disagreement over the expression of one’s beliefs has degraded into an unhealthy series of diatribes that paint our schools as dangerous places to work and learn.”

Darwinists' Greatest Fear: Freedom of Science
'Expelled' movie prompts four state's legislatures to advance “Academic Freedom” legislation

Opponents and those who challenge some or all of the tenets of Darwinism have been encouraged recently as the “Academic Freedom” legislation advanced for review in four states.
If passed, the bills would guarantee the freedom of both teachers and students throughout public schools to share views contradicting or challenging the tenets of Darwinism in the classroom without fears of reprisal.
Lawmakers in Louisiana, Missouri, Alabama, and Michigan said that the efforts to pass the bills were a response to the concerns of teachers and students who reportedly felt marginalized, discriminated, or ostracized if they shared personal views that ran counter to Darwinism.
The Academic Freedom legislation, however, has been faced with some opposition.
Efforts in Florida to pass a bill that would have given students the opportunity to “think critically” and “constantly raise questions” regarding evolution fell flat last week when opponents criticized the bill as an attempt to infuse religion in schools.
But supporters argue that such legislation efforts are about freedom and civil discussion.
“Charles Darwin himself said that fair results could only be obtained by fully balancing and stating the facts and arguments on both sides of each question,” noted Casey Luskin, an attorney with the Discovery Institute, in a statement.
Luskin credited Ben Stein's new film, “Expelled: No Intelligence Allowed,” with contributing to the proliferation of Academic Freedom legislation. The film, which released nationwide last month, features researchers, professors, and academics who claim to have been marginalized, silenced, or threatened with academic expulsion because of their challenges to some or all parts of Darwin’s theory of evolution.

Atheist Scientists in Uproar over Movie Showing Intolerance of Evidence for Intelligent Design
Atheist scientists who have become famous for attacking those who disagree with them are now loudly complaining about supposedly being mistreated in a film they haven't seen.

Oxford zoologist, Richard Dawkins, has made a lot of money and fame calling people who believe in God "delusional." Yet he is now grumbling that the producers of EXPELLED: No Intelligence Allowed "tricked" him into doing an interview. EXPELLED exposes the intimidation, persecution and career destruction that takes place when any scientist dares dissent from the view that all life on earth is the mere result of random mutation and natural selection.
"Some of these people -- especially Mr. Dawkins -- spend a lot of time insulting the millions of folks who disagree with them, so you would think they would have a little tougher skin," said Mark Mathis, one of the film's producers. "The funny thing is they are whining about the fact that the film is going to allow them to insult people on a much larger stage."
Other notable scientists who claim they were "deceived" by the producers of EXPELLED include Eugenie Scott, Executive Director of the National Center for Science Education and PZ Myers, a biologist at the University of Minnesota, Morris, who devotes much of his time to his popular science blog.
Myers has attacked the film several times on his blog since EXPELLED announced its arrival in theatres in February 2008.
