President Obama's Secretary of the Interior, Sally Jewell, announced a new initiative of the National Park Service to build national monuments to commemorate historic achievements of the rise of homosexuality in America.

The announcement Friday that the National Park Service will begin installing markers at places of importance to the history of lesbian, gay, bisexual and transgender Americans is a step toward including them in the national narrative — and components of education, supporters said.
Jewell said the nation is on a journey to expand civil rights to historically underrepresented groups. The process on LGBT issues mirrors efforts the service already has undertaken to preserve and promote locations that reflect the roles of Latinos, Asian-Americans and women in U.S. history.
"Part of the job of the National Park Service is to tell this story," she said.
"Symbolically it's hugely important that now LGBT history is officially part of the national narrative," [homosexual activist Eliza] Byard said. "This is part of what our federal government will identify, preserve and single out."

From "Historic LGBT Sites To Be Featured In U.S. National Park Service Initiative" by Lisa Leff, Associated Press 5/28/14
Interior Secretary Sally Jewell is convening a panel of 18 scholars next month that will be charged with exploring the LGBT movement's story in areas such as law, religion, media, civil rights and the arts. The committee will identify relevant sites and its work will be used to evaluate them for inclusion on the National Register of Historic Places, designation as National Historic Landmarks, or consideration as national monuments, Park Service Director Jonathan Jarvis said.
The scholars' study, which is expected to be completed by 2016, is being financed with $250,000 from the Gill Foundation, a major donor to gay civil rights causes.
The Park Service also has been trying to incorporate LGBT perspectives into its ranger-led interpretations of sites such as the National Mall. It's currently trying to collect stories and artifacts from gay people who worked in Navy shipyards for the museum at Rosie the Riveter/WWII Home Front National Historical Park in Richmond, California.

The theme study is part of a broader initiative under the Obama Administration to ensure that the National Park Service reflects and tells a more complete story of the people and events responsible for building this nation. . . .
“The National Park Service is America’s storyteller and protector of the places where America’s history can be found,” National Park Service Director Jonathan B. Jarvis said. “As we prepare to celebrate the National Park Service’s Centennial in 2016, we have rededicated ourselves to sharing more diverse stories of our nation’s history, particularly the struggles for civil rights. By telling these stories, we are inviting new audiences to visit their national parks and historic sites and to discover a personal connection in these special places.”
Over the next 12 to 18 months, the National Park Service will work with scholars to explore ways to celebrate and interpret LGBT heritage. The scholars will hold their first meeting in Washington, D.C., on June 10. The public will be invited to take part in this meeting to learn more about the initiative and share comments on its initial phases.
In 2010, the National Historic Landmark (NHL) Program began actively looking for sites associated with LGBT history that may have the potential to be designated as NHLs or listed in the National Register of Historic Places. The LGBT theme study will expand upon this work, and provide a framework for future site nominations for both the NHL’s and National Register of Historic Places. Owner approval for these sites is necessary before nominations can be prepared and the NHL Program has begun working with the LGBT community to encourage both outreach to owners and the completion of nominations for these properties.

“Yes it’s controversial. There are parts of our civil rights history that are controversial,” Jewell said.
“We can help promote a dialogue across the board. We can make the issue more relevant to people who visit National Park sites, and engage school children,” said Joshua Laird, Commissioner of National Parks of New York Harbor.
A small group of gay rights activists holding up a banner that read “Don’t Stop at Our History—Full Federal Equality Now!” rallied across from the press conference to remind President Obama that much more work needs to be done.
“Our movement is not over, and it’s beyond marriage,” said Caleb-Michael Files who came to New York City on Thursday from his home in Missouri for a summer internship program. “We cannot stop fighting until we have our trans brothers and sisters having trans inclusive health benefits and the right to be able to be who they are every day in their workplaces.”

Last year, supporters of equality celebrated the Supreme Court's decision to strike down a key provision of the Defense of Marriage Act, a ruling which, at long last, gave loving, committed families the respect and legal protections they deserve. In keeping with this decision, my Administration is extending family and spousal benefits -- from immigration benefits to military family benefits -- to legally married same-sex couples.
My Administration proudly stands alongside all those who fight for LGBT rights. Here at home, we have strengthened laws against violence toward LGBT Americans, taken action to prevent bullying and harassment, and prohibited discrimination in housing and hospitals. Despite this progress, LGBT workers in too many States can be fired just because of their sexual orientation or gender identity; I continue to call on the Congress to correct this injustice by passing the Employment Non-Discrimination Act. . . .
