Dartmouth Expands Sex-blind Dorm Room Assignments

In its policy to allow anybody room with anybody, Dartmouth College is supporting the Gay Agenda proposition that there are not two genders, but rather a spectrum of gender where no one is male or female.

But for some, reality hits home:

“It would theoretically be a good idea [but] . . . We all use the same bathrooms, and you can’t really have boys and girls using the same bathroom in a way that makes everyone feel comfortable.”

Dems' Life Mission to Kill the Unborn, Says Governor

The governor was discussing a new abortion restriction law requiring doctors who perform abortions at a clinic to be certified OB-GYNs with admitting privileges at a local hospital. He said opposition to the bill came from the political left.

The House Democratic leader says Bryant’s comments went “totally, totally too far,” especially because Mississippi voters rejected a personhood amendment declaring life begins at conception.

From "Bryant: Left’s mission is to abort children" by Jeff Amy, Associated Press 4/26/12

“The hypocrisy of the left, that now tried to kill this bill, that says I should have never signed it, the true hypocrisy is that their one mission in life is to abort children, is to kill children in the womb,” Bryant told [radio host Tim] Wildmon. “And it doesn’t really matter, they don’t care that if the mother’s life is in jeopardy, that if something goes wrong, a doctor can’t admit them to a local hospital, that he’s not even board-certified.”

During his campaign last fall, Bryant co-chaired with Wildmon’s father, [American Family Association] founder Donald Wildmon, an effort to pass a state constitutional amendment saying life begins at fertilization. Supporters of that “personhood” amendment believed it would provide a new avenue to challenge legalized abortion.

Days before 58 percent of Mississippi voters rejected the measure, Bryant appeared at a pro-personhood rally in Tupelo with Donald Wildmon and U.S. Rep Alan Nunnelee, a Tupelo Republican. There, Bryant said if voters were to reject the amendment, “Satan wins.” He called the campaign “a battle of good and evil of Biblical proportion.”

His comments were directed at those who insist that the unborn do not have the right to life."

Bryant went on to say in the interview he wants to end abortion in the state which has been his position since he began his campaign for governor.

"That's what I said and that's what I intend to do," said Bryant.

Jiz Lee has performed in over 100 films, some of which will be screened Friday evening at Williams College, one of the most prestigious schools in the country.

Lee was invited by the Queer Student Union to discuss her experience with porn and its relationship to personal empowerment.

Lee, a transgender star, will also discuss the visibility of the queer and trans communities in adult film as well as self-love, body positivity and consent.

The entire weekend will feature events sponsored by the Dively Committee for Human Sexuality and Diversity's 20th anniversary.

Boy Scouts Hold Rules on Gays, Liberals Outraged, Again

A lesbian leading a Cub Scout pack in Ohio, breaking the rule against homosexual leaders, has recently been dismissed from the Boy Scouts of America. In 2000, the U.S. Supreme Court upheld the prerogative of the Boy Scouts to restrict its leadership/membership as such, but now homosexualists, backed by Hollywood and various liberals, have launched a P.R. campaign to ruin the organization, even using Mitt Romney's own statements in their favor.

Jennifer Tyrell, a 32-year-old Bridgeport mother of four, withdrew her 7-year-old son from the Boy Scouts of America when she was recently dismissed after serving as leader of his Cub pack for several months.

Tyrell is working with Change.org, a liberal political group, on a campaign to raise awareness about the Boy Scouts' policy toward gays and lesbians. She said she gathered 140,000 signatures and said she hopes to push the organization to accept gay leaders and scouts.

The organization said it respects people's right to a different opinion.

"Scouting will continue to teach our members to treat everyone with courtesy and respect," the [BSA] statement said.

. . . Tyrrell traveled to New York from her home in Bridgeport, Ohio, to build momentum for a petition to overturn what she says are Ohio Boy Scout's anti-gay policies . . .

The Boy Scouts of America, whose oath calls for members to be "morally straight," maintains that as a private organization it has the right to exclude gays and atheists from its ranks.

That stance was upheld by the U.S. Supreme Court in 2000 but has led many state and local governments to deny support for the Scouts.

The organization said it believes Scouting is not the right place for youngsters to be exposed to issues of sexual orientation.

Because of the policy, Tyrrell said she only reluctantly allowed her 7-year-old son to join up in Bridgeport, where she lives with her partner and their four children. Told, she said, by the local cub master that it didn't matter that she is a lesbian, she was drafted to lead the pack in September.

“I feel as though I’m right in this, and I feel one day they’ll realize that,” Tyrrell told the Daily News Monday.

Atheists Want WWI Memorial Cross Demolished in RI

The Freedom From Religion Foundation is demanding that a cross outside of the fire station in Woonsocket, Rhode Island, as well as a prayer on the department website, be removed because both are unconstitutional.  Citizens overwhelmingly support the 1921 memorial to fallen World War I soldiers, some arguing that the cross is NOT in reference to Christianity.
“The majority now is being bullied by the minority, by the atheists and by the secularists and we feel like we are on the defensive . . .”
-- Roman Catholic Bishop Thomas J. Tobin

The Woonsocket Call reports that the Madison, Wis.-based [atheist] group sent Mayor Leo Fontaine a letter calling the cross' display in the parking lot of the fire department "unlawful" because of the separation of church and state.

The foundation says an image of an angel and "The Fire Fighter's Prayer" on the department's website are also unconstitutional.

The group says it received a complaint from a local resident, but officials in Woonsocket are skeptical. Fontaine says the monument has been there for 97 years and no one has had a problem with it.

“It’s one of those things that you want to try to dismiss because, you know, a couple knuckle heads out in Wisconsin have an idea that they feel offended about something and suddenly everybody has to jump for them and I don’t want to have to resort to that but I also don’t want to be unprepared either,” [Mayor Leo] Fontaine told WPRO’s John DePetro.

State Representative Jon Brien from Woonsocket agreed with Fontaine, “What I just heard is so ludicrous its even hard to believe,” Brien told the WPRO Morning News with Tara Granahan and Andrew Gobeil, “This is an organized war on religion, but not religion in general it is a war on Catholicism.”

“They can do it now because they know city and towns are broke so they are not going to be able to put up the money to fight them the way that they normally would,” said Brien.

Fontaine said he doesn’t view the monument as religious in nature. “This cross is there primarily as part of a war memorial and not so much to symbolize the Christian cross but To signify the crosses over thousands and thousands of graves of American soldier who fought and gave their lives for very freedom that this freedom from religion group operates under,” said Fontaine.

City Council President John F. Ward . . . said the memorial being criticized by the Freedom From Religion Foundation is a historical monument, dedicated to people from Woonsocket who gave their lives in the two World Wars, not a religious one.

From "Bishop Tobin weighs in on war monument, calls atheists bullies" by Dee DeQuattro, WPRO News (Radio 630/99.7FM) 4/26/12

Bishop Tobin says the challenge to the war monument that features a cross in Woonsocket by a Wisconsin atheist group is a “serious attack on religious expression and religious freedom” and that the atheists are bullying those who have faith.

“We are seeing a slow but steady erosion of a basic American value and that is the freedom of religious expression,” said Tobin. Tobin said the cross should not be taken down but he is open to relocating it to an area of more prominence where it will not be an “issue.” Mayor Leo Fontaine of Woonsocket said he is looking at spaces on private land that the monument could be relocated to if necessary. A rally scheduled for next Wednesday May, 2 at 4:30 p.m. at the monument aims to urge the city to keep the monument where it is.

Tobin told John DePetro that religion is everywhere in American society and various faiths are represented. He said that it is impossible for someone “offended” by the presence of religion to avoid it completely so they need to come to terms with it. “It is very hard to be immune to all that. If people are offended by that they have to deal with their issues,” said Tobin. “They cannot live in a bubble. They cannot isolate themselves completely from every religious expression in our nation, in our culture, in our society.”

From "Cross in group's crosshairs" by Russ Olivo, The Call (Woonsocket, RI) 4/23/12

On April 13, the Madison, Wisc.-based foundation sent Mayor Leo T. Fontaine a letter calling the display of the “Latin cross” on public property “unlawful” and demanding that the situation be rectified.

Sprinkled with references to case law affirming the separation of religion and government, the warning has sparked outrage among veterans, city officials and many others in this overwhelmingly Roman Catholic enclave.

“It’s a jobs program for lawyers with nothing better to do,” says [Council President] Ward. “I have serious doubts that someone actually reached out to them to file a complaint.”

But city officials take the threat seriously. FFRF is a well-heeled organization whose track record proves it’s not bashful about backing up the tough talk with action. It’s taken on numerous high-profile legal battles over the church-state divide and has won many. It has a litigation fund that’s reportedly in the vicinity of $5.5 million and, by its own accounting, is presently pressing complaints in 11 states, including Pennsylvania, Colorado, Arizona, Montana, Tennessee, Virginia and others.

Planned Parenthood Defunding: Arizona Next

The Arizona legislature has passed the Whole Woman’s Health Funding Priority Act of Arizona (HB 2800) in a party-line vote -- a bill that bars the use of public funds by organizations that perform abortions. Planned Parenthood Sues Arizona for Defunding

-- From "Planned Parenthood funds at risk in Arizona" by Mary Jo Pitzl, Arizona Republic News 4/24/12

HB 2800, sponsored by Rep. Justin Olson, R-Mesa, would have no effect on dollars that pass through the state Department of Health Services. That’s because the state does not provide money for family planning, agency spokesman Laura Oxley said.

Arizona receives $900,000 in federal money for family-planning and reproductive-health services and passes it on to county health departments and the Maricopa Integrated Health System. Those agencies do not provide abortions.

. . . a spokeswoman for Arizona’s Medicaid program said it is doubtful the bill would affect its services because the Arizona Health Care Cost Containment System sends public dollars to private providers who can choose which partners to work with.

Arizona already prohibits using tax dollars for abortions except to save the woman's life. But supporters say the bill is needed to cut off indirect funding for Planned Parenthood.

Guttmacher says court orders make laws in three of those states temporarily unenforceable.

Rep. Marilyn Musgrave, Vice President of Government Affairs for SBA List, told LifeNews after the vote: “Planned Parenthood’s abortion-centered business model does not need or deserve taxpayer dollars. We encourage Gov. Brewer to quickly sign this bill into law. Arizona is leading the charge to protect taxpayers and women from Planned Parenthood and the violence of abortion.”

Alliance Defense Fund Senior Counsel Steven Aden also commented, saying, “The hard-earned tax money of Arizonans shouldn’t be funneled to groups that perform abortions. This law ensures that public funds will not be used to subsidize the activities of organizations like Planned Parenthood that have demonstrated, nationwide, that they care more about their bottom line than they do about women or the proper use of taxpayer money.”

In 2011, eight states successfully defunded Planned Parenthood of more than $61.7 million — including Texas, New Hampshire, and Indiana. Ohio, Iowa, and Oklahoma have taken on Planned Parenthood’s tax funding, in addition to Arizona, this year.

NC Gay 'Marriage' Debate Hot - for Obama? NOT!

North Carolina's referendum vote for traditional marriage, likely to succeed in just two weeks, is a hot topic for voters, but for President Obama, who barely carried the state in 2008, it's simply too toxic for today's campaign speech, because little more than the president's deep pockets favor the Gay Agenda.
“The president has done more to advance gay rights than any other.”-- Clo Ewing, Obama campaign spokeswoman

The proposed constitutional amendment would identify traditional marriage as the only domestic legal union recognized by the state. State law, which already limits marriage to a man and a woman, won't change if the question fails . . .

Friday's rally resembled a combination evangelistic crusade and outdoor concert, as a singer's renditions of "God Bless America" and the "Battle Hymn of the Republic" were interspersed with preaching and explanations on the history of marriage. Rally-goers raised their hands in prayer, gave hearty "amens" and held placards supporting the amendment.

State Capitol Police estimated the crowd in downtown Raleigh at about 3,000, as churches and Christian schools bused in members and students to the Halifax Mall.

From "In North Carolina, more evidence of Obama’s delicate approach to gay rights" by Amy Gardner, Washington Post 4/23/12

. . . President Obama is not expected to touch the [referendum] subject when he appears in Chapel Hill . . .

Instead, Obama will talk about college loans, his aides said, kicking off a two-day, three-state tour designed to energize the youth vote. His delicate sidestep of Amendment One, a ballot initiative to be decided May 8 . . . is seen by some as another sign that he is not fully committed to gay rights — an interpretation that could dampen the enthusiasm of the young voters he is trying to court.

It will also be up to Obama to navigate the political crosscurrents of a complicated state in which he must court multiple constituencies that do not all agree on all the same issues.

. . . Quietly opposing Amendment One, but keeping his distance from on-the-ground efforts to defeat it, could be an essential strategy for Obama to pull back together the diverse coalition that elected him last time.

From "The Marriage Amendment: A question of state policy or a test of faith?" by Larry Clark, Hickory Daily Record 4/21/12

The issue is drawn between conservatives and liberals, but not always between Republicans and Democrats.

This is how the state Constitution would read if Amendment One passes:
"Sec. 6. Marriage.

“Marriage between one man and one woman is the only domestic legal union that shall be valid or recognized in this State. This section does not prohibit a private party from entering into contracts with another private party; nor does this section prohibit courts from adjudicating the rights of private parties pursuant to such contracts."
For many, the Marriage Amendment is about religion.

Many people believe the Marriage Amendment will be decided on the voters’ gut feelings. Is same-sex marriage a sin or is it acceptable in light of their religious beliefs.

From "Black churchgoers break with leading Democrats on marriage amendment" by Michael Gordon & Tim Funk, Charlotte Observer 4/21/12

A March 23 survey by Public Policy Polling of Raleigh showed that black voters statewide support the measure 61 percent to 30 percent. Whites: 58-38 percent in favor.

More than 80 percent of the state’s African-Americans voters are Democrats. Their support for the amendment represents a rare break with the party’s leaders and civil rights groups.

As such, the marriage amendment has hammered a wedge between two enduring traits of African-American believers – a tradition of political and social activism, and a streak of moral conservatism, especially when it comes to gays and lesbians.

The state NAACP has led the fight to defeat the amendment . . .

Yet Mark Harris, the white pastor of First Baptist Church in Charlotte and a statewide leader in the campaign for passage, says the vote will show “how out of touch the state NAACP is with most African-Americans” on the issue.

Gay Agenda: Gender Neutrality a.k.a. Paganism

As seen in various European countries, once a society accepts same-sex "marriage" and a plethora of special rights for homosexuals, the push then extends past gender equality to gender neutrality where humans are no longer distinguished as male and female.
". . . to understand the contemporary sexual revolution, we need to see the 'new sexuality'—particularly . . . in its homosexual expression—as an integral expression of age-old religious paganism."
For background, read Paganism Acceptance Growing in America and also read Homosexual 'Marriage' Not Enough; Next Goal as well as Pope: Gay Agenda & Abortion Dooms European Society

-- From "Sweden’s New Gender-Neutral Pronoun: Hen -- A country tries to banish gender" by Nathalie Rothschild, Slate 4/11/12

. . . The idea is that the government and society should tolerate no distinctions at all between the sexes. This means on the narrow level that society should show sensitivity to people who don't identify themselves as either male or female, including allowing any type of couple to marry. But that’s the least radical part of the project. What many gender-neutral activists are after is a society that entirely erases traditional gender roles and stereotypes at even the most mundane levels.

. . . Social Democrat politicians have proposed installing gender-neutral restrooms so that members of the public will not be compelled to categorize themselves as either ladies or gents. Several preschools have banished references to pupils' genders . . . They believe this fulfills the national curriculum's guideline that preschools should "counteract traditional gender patterns and gender roles" and give girls and boys "the same opportunities to test and develop abilities and interests without being limited by stereotypical gender roles."

. . . Last fall, 200 teachers attended a major government-sponsored conference discussing how to avoid "traditional gender patterns" in schools. . . . At Christmastime, [school] staff rewrote a traditional song . . . When pupils play house, they are encouraged to include "mommy, daddy, child" in their imaginary families, as well as "daddy, daddy, child"; "mommy, mommy, child"; "daddy, daddy, sister, aunty, child"; or any other modern combination.

. . . One Swedish school got rid of its toy cars because boys "gender-coded" them and ascribed the cars higher status than other toys. Another preschool removed "free playtime" from its schedule because, as a pedagogue at the school put it, when children play freely "stereotypical gender patterns are born and cemented. In free play there is hierarchy, exclusion, and the seed to bullying."

UPDATE 1/31/15 - Mr., Ms., Mrs. Forbidden: New York University Strips Students of Gender Identification

From "Sweden's Gender Neutrality Push: Boys and Girls Now Called 'Hen'" by Stoyan Zaimov, Christian Post Reporter 4/18/12

Earlier this month, the gender-neutral pronoun "hen" was proposed by lobbyists to be used in public schools instead of "he" (han in Swedish) and "she" (hon). The decision came shortly after the publication of Sweden's first ever gender-neutral children's book, Kivi och Monsterhund (Kivi and Monsterdog). It tells the story of Kivi, a child who wants a dog for "hen's" birthday. Jesper Lundqvist, the author, also introduces several gender-neutral words in the book.

Others have suggested this new initiative could be both psychologically and socially damaging for Sweden's children.

Elise Claeson, a columnist and a former equality expert at the Swedish Confederation of Professions, expressed that school-aged children can become confused by talks of a third gender, the one referred to as "hen," at a time when they are developing both physically and mentally.

From "Androgyny: The Pagan Sexual Ideal" by Peter Jones, JETS 43/3 (September 2000) 443–469

This [homosexual] movement has come a long way fast. It will not go away soon, I believe, because it is so intimately tied to deep changes in modern society, in particular those associated with philosophical postmodernism.

The subject, in its spiritual, religious, and even eschatological dimensions, needs to be treated and debated among us, not simply as an unfortunate social deviation or ephemeral social fad, but as a cutting-edge component of a rising, all-encompassing religious world view that is diametrically opposed to the world view of Christian theism. One fruitful way to approach this pressing issue is to consider the religious roots of homosexuality. The recent radical changes in our society, include, simultaneously, both the liberation of sex and the rediscovery of pagan mystical spirituality. Is such a pairing pure coincidence or is it the result of a necessary organic relationship? Has there always existed an ineluctable connection between pagan religion and pagan sex? For instance, while radical pagan feminists speak of the need of a “change of [religious] consciousness,” such spiritual transformation is always proposed by way of a radical recalibration of our perceptions of sexuality. In other words, sexuality appears central, not peripheral, to the spiritual quest. This, I believe, will become more and more evident in the homosexual movement, namely, that this particular sexual life-style will be the promoter of a particular kind of religion. Thus, while sexual liberation in its popular, successful, government-financed versions strategically associates itself with “civil rights,” pro-choice civic values, and politically-correct tolerance, often studiously avoiding any obvious religious dimension, its ultimate legitimization—since all human beings are religious—proceeds from the age-old dogmas of paganism, which, unlike their modern equivalent, never tried to hid behind a thin veil of temple-state separation. If everything is indeed political, as the radicals often proclaim, everything is also spiritual, and thus the spiritual is also sexual.

Gay Teacher Sexting Boy Resigns, Media Silent

Paul Weil, a 13-year faculty member and dean at Stevenson High School, near Chicago, was forced to resign after a police investigation of lewd text messages he sent to an 18-year-old male student. Although Weil is known by the school and students to be homosexual, this pertinent fact has gone entirely unreported by the media -- a fact quite relevant when reporting of sexual predator teachers.
"He's a good man, and it's an unfortunate way to end, and it should not overshadow all the good."
-- Jim Conrey, spokesman for Adlai E. Stevenson High School (Lincolnshire, IL)

One of six deans at a north suburban high school resigned while being investigated for allegedly sending inappropriate text messages to a student.

Lincolnshire police said the texts were deemed inappropriate, but at this point they don't appear to be criminal.

Weil was hired by the district as a french teacher in 1999. He became a dean four years ago.

The dean, Paul Weil, was under investigation for sending texts to an 18-year-old male student.

Further details about the text messages that Weil allegedly sent have not been revealed.

The scandal was the talk of the Stevenson campus earlier in the day Thursday, but. CBS 2 was not allowed to approach any of the school’s more than 4,000 students while on campus.

The Lake County State’s Attorney’s office is reviewing the texts to determine whether any criminal charges are warranted in the case.

Paul Weil, who was dean of students at Stevenson High School since 2008 and a faculty member since 1999, submitted his resignation Wednesday, and the District 125 school board voted late Thursday to accept it.

Conrey would not address the content of the texts, other than to call it inappropriate. He said he didn't know how the texts came to the attention of school authorities. He said Weil, who could not be reached for comment late Thursday, has not been at school since the investigation was launched in recent days.

In February, Stevenson officials confiscated the cellphones of students to crack down on alleged campus drug sales, using text messages stored on phones to gather evidence. The investigative technique raised questions among some legal experts and unnerved students who said they assumed texting to be private.

Both Conrey and Lincolnshire Police Chief Peter Kinsey said they could not explain what made the texts inappropriate.

Kinsey said Weil came into contact with the student through his disciplinary problems.

“The student seemed to miss school from time to time for no apparent reason,” Kinsey said Friday.

School officials learned of the messages last week, [Conrey] said, though he did not explain how they came to light. He and Kinsey both said they did not know how many messages Weil exchanged with the student, but that Weil was likely using his own phone.

UPDATE 9/24/13: From "New Westlake [High School in Austin, Texas] administrator investigated for inappropriate student texts" by Tony Plohetski and Melissa B. Taboada, American-Statesman Staff

[Eanes School] District officials said today that some school leaders were aware of Paul Weil’s history during a recent interview and vetting process, but hired him because he was the best candidate. However, a selection committee made up of school teachers and administrators were not informed of Weil’s background until after they had interviewed him, officials said. Once the committee learned of the incident, however, the members unanimously supported his selection.

According to the [Licolnshire, IL police] report . . . which refer to a series of text messages between the two: “I don’t feel scared by the guy. To an extent, they were ‘uncomforting’ but it’s not that I didn’t want to go to school. I never wanted a dean change. But he would ask to talk to me on the phone. I would think, ‘No, I didn’t want to talk to you on the phone.’ … It was just weird. Sometimes I would not respond or think of excuses.”

Police records show the text exchanges began in September 2011 and included: “Pizza delivery boy? Hot” and, referring to a trip the student was taking, “Don’t come home with a venereal disease.”

In one exchange last March, Weil texted the student, “Such a funny boy you are. When are we gonna hang out so I can put you to work? I have long list of things for you to do.”

Westlake Principal John Carter, who took the helm of the Eanes district’s high school in 2012-13, was principal of Stevenson High [in Illinois] at the time of Weil’s investigation.

“There is no doubt that Mr. Weil is an outstanding educator,” Carter said in the written statement. . . .

Planned Parenthood's Prayer Vigil for More Abortion

A California abortion mill has launched a 40-day prayer effort asking "God" to bless abortionists and the families who choose abortion, and to deafen abortion customers to the pro-life message.

For background, read Prayer Vigil Saves Babies & Mothers from Abortion and also read Abortion Prayer Vigil Nationwide: 40 Days for Life as well as Praying for Victims of Planned Parenthood Nationwide

-- From "Planned Parenthood’s abortion prayer" by Jordan Sekulow and Matthew Clark, posted at Washington Post 4/18/12

Some of the prayers . . . are for the abortionists. Others are for all “women to access . . . abortion,” and one is to “give thanks and celebrate that abortion is still safe and legal.”

Still other prayers are against pro-life advocates. They pray that women on the way to have an abortion would be “shielded” from the lifesaving message of pro-life sidewalk counselors and “give thanks for abortion escorts who guide women safely through the hostile gauntlets of protesters.” In another, “we pray for women who have been made afraid of their own power [of choice, i.e. abortion] by their religion. May they learn to reject fear and live bravely.”

From "Planned Parenthood Group Launches 40-Day 'Prayer' Campaign for Abortion Industry" by Dave Bohon, The New American 4/15/12

. . . The project, entitled “40 Days of Prayer to Keep Abortion Safe and Legal,” is sponsored by Six Rivers Planned Parenthood [SRPP] in Eureka, California, and features 40 different prayers individuals can offer for those involved in the abortion process: the mothers, escorts, abortionists performing the procedure — everyone, it seems, except the babies destroyed by abortion. The effort runs from March 18 through April 27.

The Rev. Rebecca Turner of Faith Aloud, one of the sponsors of the project, explained to Focus on the Family’s Citizen Link that the “prayer” initiative is based on the belief that “abortion is a very private decision that women do often make.”

While it is impossible to ignore the obvious similarities, the pro-abortion minister insisted that her group’s prayer campaign was not intended as a challenge to 40 Days for Life, the annual initiative during which pro-life individuals and groups pray for an end to abortion. She did, however claim that the pro-life prayer project was “misguided ... because it completely eliminates the woman. And it is the pregnant woman that we are concerned for.”

She emphasized that “instead of praying for unborn children, you know, we’re praying for those women . . .”

From "Planned Parenthood launches ‘40 Days of Prayer’ for abortion" by Kathleen Gilbert, LifeSiteNews.com 4/11/12

The campaign is being advertised under SRPP’s Clergy for Choice, who bill themselves as “religious leaders who value all human life.” The prayers themselves are credited to Faith Aloud, a “religious and ethical voice for reproductive justice” based in St. Louis.

Liberty Counsel likened Planned Parenthood’s latest tactic to Nazi Germany’s attempts to use religion to dehumanize the portions of society they sought to exterminate.

“Planned Parenthood’s attempts to develop a ‘spiritual’ aspect to the pro-abortion argument can seem comparable to the religious leaders in Germany who supported Adolf Hitler and the Nazis. It was wrong then and it is wrong now,” wrote LC in a press release Tuesday.

“Planned Parenthood has stooped to a new low by exploiting pastors and churches to ‘celebrate’ the slaughter of babies made in God’s image and likeness,” [David Bereit, National Director of 40 Days for Life,] said. “They certainly wouldn’t be doing this if 40 Days for Life wasn’t having a devastating impact on their abortion business!”

First Abortion-free State May Be Mississippi

Mississippi Gov. Phil Bryant signed House Bill HB 1390 Monday, requiring that all abortion clinic physicians be board-certified in obstetrics and gynecology, and have hospital admitting privileges, but the only abortion clinic in the state doesn't meet the requirements, the owner says.

UPDATE 7/13/12: Judge allows Miss. abortion clinic to remain open during its challenge of new law

-- From "Mississippi law may shut sole abortion clinic" By Robbie Ward, Reuters 4/16/12

Diane Derzis, the owner of Jackson Women's Health Organization, the state's only abortion-providing clinic, has said the law could shut down her business.

Just one of the three physicians who provide abortions at her clinic has admitting privileges, which allow doctors to refer patients to a specific hospital if further treatment is needed.

Derzis said area hospitals are reluctant to grant admitting privileges to physicians who perform abortions.

“I believe that all human life is precious, and as governor, I will work to ensure that the lives of the born and unborn are protected in Mississippi,” Bryant said in a statement after signing the legislation.

Derzis had accused Republicans of “hiding behind words like ‘safety’ and ‘women’s health’” while attempting to shutter her facility, and she also vowed to sue the state of Mississippi if the doctors at her clinic were unable to obtain admitting privileges. She could not be reached for comment on Monday.

Planned Parenthood was quick to condemn the new law. “Make no mistake, this law is based on a political agenda, not medical necessity,” Cecile Richards, the group’s president, said in a statement. “In yet another shortsighted attempt to ban abortion in Mississippi, Governor Bryant and lawmakers are putting their ideology above the health and safety of Mississippi women. This law is bad policy and endangers women’s health.”

From "Mississippi adopts new abortion restrictions" by Richard Fausset, Los Angeles Times 4/17/12

The bill takes effect July 1. Derzis has said she will consider suing the state to suspend the law if her doctors are unable to comply.

Wayne Slocum, vice chairman of the Mississippi section of the American Congress of Obstetrics and Gynecology, said doctors in private practice would still be able to perform elective abortions in the state.

However, Derzis' clinic is probably the only place where a woman can have the procedure, Slocum said. Other doctors object for moral reasons, or they are afraid of pressure from antiabortion groups.

"Today you see the first step in a movement, I believe, to do what we campaigned on -- to say we're going to try to end abortion in Mississippi," Bryant said after signing the bill.

However, it's not clear that the new law will accomplish that goal. Doctors who do fewer than 10 abortions a month, or fewer than 100 a year, aren't required to have their offices regulated as abortion facilities.

The Mississippi State Department of Health website shows 2,297 abortions, listed as "induced terminations," were performed in the state in 2010, the most recent year for which statistics were available. Of that number, 2,251 were performed on Mississippi residents. The site does not specify how many were done at the clinic and how many in other offices or hospitals.

From "Mississippi Genius: Non-Abortion Ban May Ban Abortions" by Steven Ertelt, LifeNews.com 4/17/12

Terri Herring of Pro-Life Mississippi talked with LifeNews about the genius behind the legislation and says botched abortions were what drove out the second-to-last abortion facility.

“The second to the last abortion clinic on Briarwood Drive in Jackson closed when the abortionist botched an abortion that led to the death of a young woman in Alabama,” Herring says. “Dr. Booker, the former abortionist at this last abortion clinic lost a recent medical malpractice lawsuit. The woman sued him after almost dying from abortion related injuries. She won the case and was awarded a judgment of over $600,000 that she is unable to collect because neither Booker nor the clinic carried any insurance.”

“Now we have out of state doctors who fly in and fly out without rendering proper care to Mississippi women. They do not currently have admitting privileges, but beginning on July 1st they must qualify or stop performing abortions,” Herring said.

“Abortion clinics regularly get by with lower standards of care because most physicians uphold their Hippocratic oath and refuse to perform abortions. Those who perform abortions are often not well qualified or held to the same standards as the rest of the medical community,” she said.

Atheists Want Marine Memorial Demolished at Pendleton

The atheist group Military Religious Freedom Foundation has caused a Marine Corps investigation into a pair of Christian crosses placed by Marines in an empty, remote spot 3,000 feet up at Camp Pendleton where no one can see them.

For background, read Supreme Court Says No Crosses; Arlington Neither? and also read Federal Appeals Court Rules Cross Unconstitutional

-- From "Memorial crosses at California Marine Corps base ignite debate" by Marty Graham, Reuters 4/13/12

Seven Marines carried the original cross to the top of the mountain, which can only be seen from the base roads, in 2003 to honor fallen Marines from the 2nd Battalion, 1st Marine Regiment.

Four of those seven Marines have since died in action, including Lance Corporal Robert Zurheide, who was killed in Iraq's Al Anbar province the following year.

The original cross was destroyed during wildfires in 2007 and was replaced in 2008 by a group [of Marines and family members].

Last year a group of Marines hauled a fire-resistant cross up to the mountaintop and placed it up next to the cross installed in 2008. Within days, the Military Religious Freedom Foundation asked that both crosses be removed and replaced with a non-religious memorial.

The raising of the cross was not an official or sanctioned Marine Corps activity but rather a private undertaking by Marines and a retired Navy chaplain who served with the four Marines.

Lance Cpl. Aaron Austin and Lance Cpl. Robert Zurheide were killed during the battle for Fallouja in 2004. Maj. Ray Mendoza was killed in Al Qaim in 2005 and Maj. Douglas Zembiec in Baghdad in 2007. The widows of Zurheide and Mendoza helped in hauling the cross up the hill.

Now two symbols are at the end of a brutal 3,000-foot hike that begins at an area of the base called Camp Horno and ends at the top of a ridge line that overlooks vast openness in one direction and the glistening Pacific Ocean in the other.

Here the crosses are blanketed in symbols of valor, sorrow and festivity. You'll see Purple Heart medals, pictures, books, messages, mementos from deployments around the globe and even a bottle or can of the fallen's favorite liquor...all left in remembrance.

But the area has become controversial and more known after a newspaper report last fall detailed the location and posted a picture. In response, several groups filed complaints with Marines arguing the site violated the Constitutional mandate of separation of church and state, including the Military Association of Atheists and Freethinkers or MAAF. They want the crosses moved to a church on private land and flags or some other symbol used instead to mark the site.

For 10 years, the crosses have stood on the hill without complaint, but the MAAF says if they don't come down soon, it will file a lawsuit and possibly hold protests outside the Marine base gates. [Critics say] the original Marines, while good intentioned, overstepped their bounds by building a shrine without approval or notice from the Corps.

Arizona Cuts Time to Kill Disabled Unborn: Critics

Arizona's Gov. Brewer has signed legislation, that passed by a large majority, to outlaw abortion at, or after, 20 weeks gestation at which time the baby feels pain, but critics say this reduces the opportunity to detect fetal abnormalities and the chance to kill the "defective" child.

The Republican-sponsored legislation also institutes new disclosure mandates that include requiring the state have a web site with images of fetuses at various stages of development for women to view.

The 20-week abortion ban does not apply in medical emergencies and it would affect a tiny percentage of abortions performed in Arizona.

Critics argued that the 20-week deadline would likely prevent timely diagnosis of anomalies in the fetus.

In 2010, Nebraska was the first to ban abortions after 20 weeks based on the theory of fetal pain. Last year, Alabama, Idaho, Indiana, Kansas and Oklahoma passed similar laws. This year, in addition to Arizona, Michigan and Georgia are considering bans.

The bill would make numerous changes to abortion laws, including banning abortions after 20 weeks except in a "medical emergency," allowing doctors to prescribe medication abortion pills only through the seventh week of pregnancy and requiring clinics to perform an ultrasound 24 hours before an abortion instead of the current requirement of an hour before.

It also would set up several new requirements: Clinics must post signs saying it is against the law to coerce a woman into having an abortion, physicians must provide additional information about health risks, and the state must create a website with abortion health risks, contact information for adoption agencies and photos or drawings of developing fetuses.

From "Arizona Bans Abortion in Woman's Second Trimester" by Jamie Ross, Courthouse News 4/11/12

House Bill 2036 bans "abortions at or after 20 weeks of gestation, except in cases of a medical emergency, based on the documented risks to women's health and the strong medical evidence that unborn children feel pain during an abortion at that gestational age."

It requires that physicians performing surgical abortions have privileges in a hospital within 30 miles from the place where the abortion is done.

The bill requires that a clinic "clearly post signs that are visible to all who enter the abortion clinic, that are clearly readable and that state it is unlawful for any person to force a woman to have an abortion and a woman who is being forced to have an abortion has the right to contact any local or state law enforcement or social service agency to receive protection from any actual or threatened physical, emotional or psychological abuse."

The bill states that a doctor who performs an abortion on a minor without certification that the pregnancy places the minor's health at risk or "that the pregnancy resulted from sexual conduct with a minor by the minor's parent, stepparent, uncle, grandparent, sibling, adoptive parent, legal guardian or foster parent or by a person who lives in the same household with the minor and the minor's mother" is guilty of a class 1 misdemeanor.

[Americans United for Life president Charmaine] Yoest praised the Arizona House for approving the measure calling it “a life-protecting bill designed to ensure that women don’t suffer from the risks of a dangerous, late-term procedure.” She said Arizona is the first in the nation to pass a late-term ban based on concerns over protecting women’s health by demonstrating that abortion is not only bad for the unborn child, it is also bad for women.

“The abortion industry’s war on women has left many injured people behind. This ban will protect women’s lives, despite the best efforts of the abortion industry to block reasonable limits on a procedure that becomes more dangerous with each passing month,” said Dr. Yoest. “Medical evidence demonstrates that abortion can cause serious physical and psychological complications—and the risk of those complications raises dramatically later in pregnancy.”

Yoest said the abortion industry commonly hides the sometimes deadly consequences of late-term abortions. She said the findings of fact included with the bill lay out some of the risks of late-term abortions, including higher medical risks and higher short-term and long-term physical and psychological complications.

Bishops Throw Down Gauntlet: Obama War on Christianity

Roman Catholic bishops issued a proclamation Thursday calling on all clergy and laity to participate in a two-week prayer vigil leading up to the Fourth of July, and to counter unjust laws "as a duty of citizenship and an obligation of faith" in a “great national campaign” to defend religious liberty.

-- From "Catholic bishops issue 'call to action' on religious freedom" by Julian Pecquet, The Hill 4/12/12

All Americans should be "on guard" as the Obama administration threatens religious liberty, the U.S. Conference of Catholic Bishops declared Thursday.

The call to action is spelled out in a document, "Our First, Most Cherished Liberty," developed by the conference's Ad Hoc Committee on Religious Liberty. It urges laity to work to protect the First Amendment and calls on dioceses across the country to schedule a "religious liberty fortnight" June 21 to July 4 to focus "all the energies the Catholic community can muster" for religious liberty.

"We need … to speak frankly with each other when our freedoms are threatened. Now is such a time," the document says. "As Catholic bishops and American citizens, we address an urgent summons to our fellow Catholics and fellow Americans to be on guard, for religious liberty is under attack, both at home and abroad."

From "Bishops urge Catholics to resist unjust laws" posted at Kansas City Star 4/13/12

In a 12-page document that quotes the Rev. Martin Luther King Jr., the bishops said priests, laypeople, public figures and others must be involved in the effort to change recent state and federal laws that church leaders believe violate religious freedom.

The highest-profile clash has been over the mandate in the Obama administration’s health care overhaul that most employers cover birth control costs for workers.

Several bishops have shut down their adoption and foster care programs where the government would require them to place children with same-sex couples. Church leaders have also been fighting tough immigration laws in Alabama and elsewhere that many religious groups say make it impossible for them to aid illegal immigrants.

Catholic leaders have also protested a decision by federal officials not to renew a church contract for work with sex-trafficking victims. Church officials would not provide the women birth control or abortion services.

From "Catholic Bishops Urge Campaign for Religious Freedom" by Laurie Goodstein, New York Times 4/12/12

For more than half a year, the bishops have put the religious liberty issue front and center, but it has not yet galvanized the Catholic laity and has even further polarized the church’s liberal and conservative flanks. In an election year, liberal Catholics have accused the bishops of making the church an arm of the Republican Party in the drive to defeat President Obama, an accusation the bishops reject.

“This ought not to be a partisan issue,” the bishops say in their statement in a section addressed to political leaders. “The Constitution is not for Democrats or Republicans or Independents. It is for all of us, and a great nonpartisan effort should be led by our elected representatives to ensure that it remains so.”

Quoting from the Rev. Dr. Martin Luther King Jr.’s “Letter from a Birmingham Jail,” the bishops say that unjust laws should be either changed or resisted.

“In the face of an unjust law,” the bishops wrote, “an accommodation is not to be sought, especially by resorting to equivocal words and deceptive practices. If we face today the prospect of unjust laws, then Catholics in America, in solidarity with our fellow citizens, must have the courage not to obey them.”

Made public April 12, the document was approved by the U.S. Conference of Catholic Bishops' Administrative Committee during its March meeting for publication as a committee statement.

The ad hoc committee opened its statement with several "concrete examples" of recent threats to religious liberty, saying that "this is not a theological or legal dispute without real-world consequences."

"An unjust law cannot be obeyed," the bishops' statement said. "In the face of an unjust law, an accommodation is not to be sought, especially by resorting to equivocal words and deceptive practices."

"If we face today the prospect of unjust laws, then Catholics in America, in solidarity with our fellow citizens, must have the courage not to obey them," it added. "No American desires this. No Catholic welcomes it. But if it should fall upon us, we must discharge it as a duty of citizenship and an obligation of faith."
