A new Gallup poll shows that more Americans oppose “doctor-assisted suicide” (48%) than those who consider it morally acceptable (45%).
-- From "Poll: Doctor-assisted suicide divisive" by UPI 5/31/11
Doctor-assisted suicide was the most controversial cultural issue in Gallup's 2011 Values and Beliefs poll, results indicated.
The three most controversial issues -- doctor-assisted suicide, abortion, and out-of-wedlock births -- were separated by fewer than 15 percentage points between participants who said they considered the issue morally acceptable from the percentage considering it morally wrong, the Princeton, N.J., polling agency said.
At least 8 in 10 U.S. adults interviewed in the survey said extramarital affairs, polygamy, cloning humans and suicide were wrong, while least six in 10 people surveyed said pornography and cloning animals were morally wrong, results indicated.

From "Assisted Suicide Support Drops to Lowest Level in 8 Years" by Steven Ertelt, LifeNews.com 5/31/11
Gallup found 51 percent of Democrats, 50 percent of independents and just 32 percent of Republicans who say they find assisted suicide morally acceptable. When looking at an age breakdown, the views of Americans are largely consistent with just 46 percent of those 18-34, 45 percent of those 35-54 and 43 percent of those 55 and older saying assisted suicide is morally okay.
Had Gallup used the term “assisted suicide” without including the word, “doctor,” support likely would have decreased further.
The Gallup poll also found strong opposition to human cloning, but support for embryonic stem cell research. Some 84 percent of Americans say human cloning is not morally justified but 62 percent of Americans say it is morally acceptable to engage in “medical research using stem cells obtained from human embryos.” Another 62 percent were morally opposed to cloning animals — making it so the objections Americans have to cloning on any level is quite clear.

Vatican "Calls Shots" Worldwide on HIV/AIDS Care
The Pope has again demonstrated that the Roman Catholic Church is not prone to defy God Almighty in favor of advocates for sexual deviancy and infidelity, who find themselves "at the mercy" of the Church which cares for their victims.
For background, read Media Blows It, re: Pope on Condoms
-- From "UNAIDS to Vatican: Pope's HIV-condom view helpful" by Nicole Winfield, Associated Press 5/30/11
The Church does . . . play a crucial role in caring for HIV-positive people, particularly in Africa where some two-thirds of the world's 22 million infected people live. It runs hospitals and hospices, orphanages and clinics and has played a critical role in helping to de-stigmatize those with the virus and stress the need for changes in sexual behavior to stop its spread.
The Vatican's emphasis on the need for changes in sexual activity has been boosted by studies showing that at least in Africa, prevention programs focusing on condom promotion aren't working and that what works is male circumcision and reducing the number of sexual partners.
Yet Dr. Edward Green, former director of the AIDS research project at Harvard University, said there is little financial support for programs that advocate partner reduction, particularly among Western donors who uniformly insist on condom distribution as part of prevention efforts.
Green says he belongs to no particular church and bases his findings on empirical evidence, not morality.

The Church has reiterated its oppositon to condoms in the fight against HIV, again labelling them an ineffective prevention tool that encourages immoral behaviour, reports PBS Newshour.
An AIDS conference hosted at the Vatican over the weekend quickly stamped out any lingering speculation that the Church might shift or broaden its policy against use of condoms to protect from HIV, the report added.
Instead, Vatican officials hailed recent findings that AIDS medications can be highly effective in preventing transmission and called for a change in "amoral sexual attitudes" that contribute to the spread of HIV.

Calif. Homosexualists Fear Public Opinion
After Californians decided, in 2008, that marriage is a union of one man and one woman, and while the courts have yet to overrule the voters to sanctify same-sex "marriage," leading homosexualists have decided against asking citizens to decide their fate, but rather are placing all hope in perpetual court proceedings.

UPDATE 6/12/11: Donations to advocate for same-sex marriage dries up
-- From "Same-sex marriage backers consider new ballot measure as Prop. 8's fate is decided" by Katie Worth, San Francisco Examiner Staff Writer 5/26/11
Leaders of California’s gay marriage movement have not yet decided how they will go about overcoming (the 2008) Proposition 8, at the polls or through the courts. After California voters banned same-sex marriage in 2008, the gay community was abuzz with talk of going back to the ballot in 2010 to reverse it. Ultimately, potential organizers concluded that waiting until 2012 would give them time to gather resources and build support.
Yet with 2012 approaching, there is no consensus whether the time is right to ask voters to grant gay people the right to marry. Some say it would be more prudent to wait for the federal courts to decide the issue; others say a legal remedy is uncertain and that waiting would be folly.

Pollster David Binder and his firm, David Binder Research, surveyed 900 likely [Calif.] voters, revealing a mix of advances and a need for further progress.
In 2009, a similar survey showed that 47 percent of voters would support repeal of Prop 8, 48 percent would oppose, and 5 percent were unsure.
In 2011, unsure voters doubled to 10 percent. Support for Prop 8's repeal decreased from 47 to 45 percent, but opposition to repeal also decreased from 48 to 45 percent.
His research indicated that 68 percent of likely voters who worship once a week or more said that they support Prop 8. Among respondents who "hardly ever" worship, 85 percent support repeal.

The group wants the school district to remove a student-led invocation and benediction, but the school district says that the remarks do not violate any laws or school policy, according to the Express.
A school spokesman says the group is just trying to create a political debate.
"It is sad that someone would choose the commencement exercises of the 50th anniversary of our school district as a forum for stirring political debate that threatens to needlessly cast a shadow of controversy over the pinnacle event of the class of 2011," school board president Roland Ruiz told the paper.

The school board president, in a statement Friday, said the district is “aware of the fine balancing act” required of the First Amendment rights of speech and religion and has set a neutral policy.
Roland Ruiz, school board president, said that allowing students to express their own religious views doesn't mean the district is sponsoring religious activity.
The lawsuit was filed on behalf of Christa and Danny Schultz, who have two children in the district, including a son scheduled to graduate next week from Medina Valley High School.

More Than Two Genders, Kindergartners Taught
Anti-bullying programs are Gay Agenda indoctrination classes in disguise, as all conservative news sources have been broadcasting for years now, but still most Americans remain unaware. Perhaps this news report will inform a few more citizens of this public school propaganda

UPDATE 6/3/11: Outrageous Transgender School Curricula (opinion)
-- From "Transgender Clownfish Controversy" by Mathew Luschek, NBC Bay Area News 5/26/11
On Monday and Tuesday, students of every grade were taught what the school called age-appropriate lessons about gender differences. Some lessons included all-girl geckos, a transgender clownfish, and boy snakes who act "girly" reports the San Francisco Chronicle.
"That's a lot of variation in nature," Gender Spectrum trainer, Joel Baum, told the students. "Evolution comes up with some pretty funny ways for animals to reproduce."
Principal Sara Stone said the lesson on gender differences was part of a larger effort to control bullying in the school, something parents supported last year.
The $1,500 cost of training was funded by a grant from the California Teachers Association.

Some girls like the color blue. Some boys like to wear things that sparkle. Not all girls play with dolls, and not all boys like to play with trucks [according to anti-bullying consultant Joel Baum of Gender Spectrum].
Kindergartners at Redwood Heights Elementary School reached those conclusions on Monday during a lesson about gender and acceptance. "Colors are colors," "toys are toys," and "activities are activities" were the mantras of a lesson designed for kindergartners and first-graders. Older children learned more about what gender means, how it's been expressed in different cultures throughout human history, and that it's possible to be both genders -- or neither.
Redwood Heights is the first elementary school in Oakland to teach children about gender identity and expression with a curriculum developed by Gender Spectrum, a San Leandro-based organization. The school's parent groups endorsed the lessons as part of an ongoing effort to make the school more welcoming, Principal Sara Stone said.

. . . some boys can act like girls; some girls can have boy body parts; and some biological boys feel like a girl inside their hearts, [Joel Baum] said.
"It turns out that there are not just two options," he said.
Parents were advised of the lesson plan weeks ago, but the curriculum was not something their children could opt out of as they can with sex and AIDS education, district officials said.
All state schools are required to have a specific plan to address safety and other issues related to sexual orientation and gender identity.

"Gender identity is one's own sense of themselves. Do they know themselves to be a girl? Do they know themselves to be a boy? Do they know themselves to be a combination?" Baum told Fox. "Gender identity is a spectrum where people can be girls, feel like girls, they feel like boys, they feel like both, or they can feel like neither."
The recent "diversity" teaching at the California elementary school is nothing more than an effort to indoctrinate children to embrace the concept that aberrant forms of sexual expression are not only acceptable, they are inherently good. It is taking place in public schools over the country and is part of a "gay" agenda to promote that homosexuality and other deviant behaviors are natural, normal and healthy.

Christians: Reverse Gay Agenda in Illinois Law
As same-sex civil unions are set to begin in Illinois next week, Christians rallied to launch a 600,000-strong grassroots petition drive to press for a constitutional amendment to define marriage as a man and a woman.

Meanwhile, a smaller contingent of gays and supporters assembled on the other side of the 100 block of West Madison Street to defend the law that puts same-sex couples on a legal par with married men and women.

Federal District Judge Lynn N. Hughes granted a temporary restraining order preventing the U.S. Department of Veterans Affairs (VA) and its Director of the Houston National Cemetery, Arleen Ocasio, from preventing Pastor Scott Rainey from praying in Jesus' name during his invocation at a Memorial Day ceremony sponsored by the National Cemetery Council for Greater Houston (a private, non-profit association). At a conference with the judge moments ago, the government conceded and informed Pastor Rainey that it will not oppose his prayer on Memorial Day.
An excerpt from the temporary restraining order reads, "The government's compulsion of a program's inclusion or exclusion of a particular religion offends the Constitution. The Constitution does not confide to the government the authority to compel emptiness in a prayer, where a prayer belongs."
"While I am very disappointed we had to take legal action, I am glad that the judge agreed that removing Jesus' name from my prayer is unconstitutional," said Pastor Rainey of Houston's Living Word Church of the Nazarene. "I am honored to be allowed to pray in the name of Jesus at this somber remembrance of our nation's fallen."

No Marriage in Most U.S. Households: Census
The liberal media is delightfully reporting that for the first time in history, married couples have dropped below half of all households in the nation. The New York Times gleefully emphasizes "the evolution of the American family toward less traditional forms."

-- From "Fewer than half of U.S. households are married couples, census says" by David Ariosto, CNN 5/26/11
Married couples have dropped below half of all U.S households, marking a historic shift in what constitutes the traditional American family, according to census data released Thursday.
Those who have tied the knot represent roughly 48% of all American households, steadily dropping from 1990 and 2000 but falling off sharply from 78% in 1950.
In 1950, 43% of American households were married couples with at least one child under the age of 18.
That number has plummeted to about one-fifth of all U.S. households.

Unmarried couples made up 12% of U.S. couples in 2010, a 25% increase in 10 years, according to Census data out today.
In Camden, N.J., 35% of couples are not married, up from 28% in 2000 and the highest of any city with at least 50,000 people. Other cities where more couples are choosing not to marry: Rochester, N.Y., 33%, up from 26%; Flint, Mich., 29%, up from 21%; Cleveland, 27%, up from 20%.
"These are places with flexibility about what constitutes a family so that even those with more prosperity may elect to have non-married families and lives," says Virginia Rutter, sociology professor at Framingham State University in Massachusetts.
Couples at both ends of the economic spectrum are opting to live together rather than marry, largely because women increasingly rely less on men to take care of them financially.

In recent history, the marriage rate among Americans was at its highest in the 1950s, when the institution defined gender roles, family life and a person’s place in society. But as women moved into the work force, cohabitation lost its taboo label, and as society grew more secular, marriage lost some of its central authority.
Today, traditional patterns have been turned upside down. Women with college degrees are now more likely to marry than those with just high school diplomas, the reverse of several decades ago, said June Carbone, a law professor at the University of Missouri-Kansas City, and co-author of “Red Families v. Blue Families.”
W. Bradford Wilcox, the director of the National Marriage Project at the University of Virginia, argues that the retreat from marriage is bad for society because it means less security for children. “It’s troubling because those kids are much more likely to be exposed to instability, complex family relations and poverty,” he said.

House Strips ObamaCare of Abortion Training Funds
The House voted Wednesday to ban teaching health centers from using federal money to teach doctors how to perform abortions, the latest in a series of anti-abortion measures pushed by the Republican majority.
-- From "House bans funds for teaching abortion techniques" by Jim Abrams, Associated Press 5/25/11
The proposal was presented as an amendment to the latest of several GOP bills to restrict funding for the health care act that was enacted last year. This bill gives Congress control over spending for a program to encourage health centers to provide training to medical residents. The amendment applies to funding in that grant program.
The Foxx amendment passed 234-182 despite the objections of some Democrats that it would prevent health centers from teaching a basic medical technique that can be critical to saving a woman's life during emergencies.
The Foxx amendment and the overall bill to restrict the health care act both are likely to die in the Democratic-controlled Senate.

From "U.S. House votes to prohibit discrimination against pro-life doctors in new medical education program, 234-182" posted at National Right to Life 5/25/11
The amendment pertains to one of the many new programs created by the sweeping health care restructuring law enacted in 2010 — the “Patient Protection and Affordable Care Act” (PPACA), often referred to as “ObamaCare.” The program provided guaranteed funding — $230 million over the first five years — for grants to “teaching health centers” (THCs) for graduate-level training in certain “primary care” fields of medicine, including obstetrics and gynecology. The new program was targeted to “community-based” health centers, including federally funded community health centers and family planning clinics.
The bill brought to the House floor by the House Republican leadership, H.R. 1216, would not abolish the new medical education program, but it would remove it from the realm of “mandatory” funding, meaning that funding level would be set during the regular annual appropriations process. To this bill, Rep. [Virginia] Foxx offered an amendment to prohibit any medical center that receives funds from the program from discriminating against any doctor, nurse, or other health care provider — for example, a medical resident — on grounds that the provider refused to “provide, pay for, provide coverage of, or refer for abortions.”
“The reaction of Planned Parenthood and NARAL to the Foxx Amendment makes it crystal clear that they want the federal taxpayer to fund training of the next generation of abortionists,” said NRLC Legislative Director Douglas Johnson. “In fact, pro-abortion activists are also trying to make it impossible to become certified in and to practice in some medical fields without participating in providing abortions. Stronger federal anti-discrimination laws are needed to counter these efforts, especially since the Obama Administration has severely weakened enforcement of the existing protective laws.”

Liberals' Study: Believers Have Smaller Brains
Researchers at the Methodist-founded Duke University have determined that born-again Christians are more likely to suffer brain atrophy (hippocampal shrinkage) than enlightened secularists.
-- From "Study suggests 'born-again' believers have smaller brains" by Yonat Shimron, Religion News Service 5/24/11
For decades, mainline Protestants have been beset by bad news: declining numbers, aging membership, waning cultural influence. A new study from Duke University Medical Center, however, gives these Protestants one reason for cheer: they seem to have larger brains than born-again Christians, Roman Catholics and the religiously unaffiliated.
The study, which examined the hippocampus region of the brain, found that Protestants who did not have a "born again" experience had significantly more gray matter than either those who reported a life-changing religious experience, Catholics, or unaffiliated older adults.
The study, funded by the National Institutes of Health and the Templeton Foundation, included at least two MRI measurements of the hippocampus region of 268 adults between 1994 and 2005.

Older adults who say they've had a life-changing religious experience are more likely to have a greater decrease in size of the hippocampus, the part of the brain critical to learning and memory, new research finds.
As people age, a certain amount of brain atrophy is expected. Shrinkage of the hippocampus is also associated with depression, dementia and Alzheimer's disease.
"One interpretation of our finding -- that members of majority religious groups seem to have less atrophy compared with minority religious groups -- is that when you feel your beliefs and values are somewhat at odds with those of society as a whole, it may contribute to long-term stress that could have implications for the brain," Amy Owen, lead author of the study and a research associate at Duke University Medical Center, said in a Duke news release.

Homosexualists Celebrate Victory over Christian America
A conservative Christian group admitted this week that it is losing the battle on gay marriage, particularly among young people.
"We've probably lost that," Focus on the Family Chief Executive and President Jim Daly said about evangelicals' battle against gay marriage. "I don't want to be extremist here, but I think we need to start calculating where we are in the culture."
In an interview with World Magazine, an evangelical Christian magazine, Daly noted that people in their 20s and 30s were especially likely to support marriage equality.
A summation is supported by a Gallup poll released last week that showed 70 percent of 18- to 34-year-olds support gay marriage. Overall 53 percent of Americans polled said it's time for gay marriage to be legal, marking the first time for such support since Gallup began tracking the issue in 2004.

Daly suggested that the church use the emerging trend as an opportunity to gets its own house in order.
“Have we done such a poor job with marriage, is He so upset with our mishandling of it in the Christian community, along with our lust of the flesh as a nation, that he is handing us over to this polygamy and same-sex situation in order to perhaps, drive the Christian community, the remnant, into saying ‘OK, there’s no no-fault divorce in our church?'”

Stickan maintained that she and other young supporters of traditional marriage have found they can respect gay, lesbian, bisexual and transgendered people and their rights while holding on to their position on same-sex marriage.

From "Why the Same-Sex Marriage Experiment Will Not Work" by Jim Daly, Focus on the Family Chief Executive and President 5/24/11
Throughout its grand history, America has regularly been willing to reevaluate cultural norms, especially when the change that challenges the status quo promises to right a wrong or advance and improve the social welfare. . . .
In the late 1960s, no-fault divorce promised to simplify, streamline and decrease the contentiousness surrounding marital breakup. Instead, it only encouraged struggling spouses to throw in the towel. Fathers abandoned their families in droves. Poverty levels skyrocketed. Prison populations increased at dramatic levels, a consequence of kids now growing up without a father in the home.
A few years later, in 1973, the Supreme Court legalized abortion in all 50 states. Supporters heralded a new era of responsibility, where every child would be a wanted child. Tragically, over 48 million babies have now been aborted and the beauty of life has been cheapened as a result, while child abuse has skyrocketed.
The expansion of welfare promised to alleviate human suffering. While in some ways noble in intent, it disincentivized work, undermined the family unit and created a perpetual cycle of dependency and poverty. Fathers were no longer needed to be an integral part of the family.
Cohabitation is yet another experiment which promised to liberate couples from the “burden” of marriage. The number of couples living together outside of marriage has increased ten-fold between 1960 and 2000. Over 12 million unmarried partners now live together in the United States. The result? Cohabitation not only decreases a person’s appetite for marriage, it also increases the risk of divorce, should the couple ever tie the knot.
In each example of social reengineering I’ve noted, progressives promised good things. Sadly, the exact opposite has happened. However well-meaning the motivation, reengineering what God has designed is not only unwise, but radical and dangerous, too.

Praying Students Ignore Lawyers & Atheists at Graduation
Seniors at Louisiana's Bastrop High School went on with prayer during their graduation ceremony May 20, despite threats of a possible lawsuit, plans to cancel the prayer, and contrary advice from a school attorney.

However, another student whose role was to call for a moment of silence during Friday's ceremony led the audience in the Lord's Prayer despite the ACLU objections.

At Ram Stadium on Friday night, 242 graduates received their diplomas amid slight controversy.
The American Civil Liberties Union of Louisiana urged Stacey Pullen, principal of Bastrop High School, to respect the First Amendment and ensure Friday night's graduation did not include a prayer as originally proposed.
Pullen said Mattice was instructed not to mention anything about religion and only observe the moment of silence. She said she was unsure if the ACLU or [openly atheist graduate Damon] Fowler would seek legal action against the school.
At the Thursday night rehearsal for the graduation, another senior, Sarah Barlow, said a prayer with reference to Jesus Christ. The prayer was listed in the graduation program, which had to be reprinted at taxpayer expense.

At the recommendation of an attorney, school administrators reprinted all the graduation announcements to rid any mention of prayer in the program. Instead, a "Moment of Silence" was listed.

"To censor only the religious viewpoints is intolerant and unconstitutional," he continued. "Students should not be bullied by the ACLU to give up their constitutional rights."
In an online forum, Damon's brother Jerrett said he is in contact with a lawyer at the Freedom From Religion Foundation about the case. The group has offered Damon a $1,000 "student activist" award for his courage to speak out.

Abortion Rate Soars for Gov't-Dependent Americans
Among Americans whose lives are most significantly dominated by government involvement (e.g.: women who earn $17,170 or less for a three-person household) the abortion rate rose by 18% between 2000 and 2008 -- a period during which government funding of "family planning" increased significantly, as well as myriad government intrusion in the lives of low income citizens.

Abortion rates have inched lower in most groups of U.S. women, but not among poor women, where they are still on the rise, according to a study [by Planned Parenthood's Guttmacher Institute].
. . . the abortion rate among women with the lowest income -- below the U.S. poverty line -- climbed from 44 to 53 abortions per 1,000 in the same time period.
Those women accounted for 16 of every 100 U.S. women aged 15 to 44 by 2008, but for 42 of every 100 abortions.

From "Abortion Rate Down Overall, Up Among Poor Women" by Katie Moisse, ABC News 5/24/11
If the 2008 rates persist, it's estimated that almost one in three women in the U.S. will have had an abortion before the age of 45.
Although teens account for 24.8 percent of U.S. abortions, women over 25 represent 49 percent, according to the report. Almost 20 percent of women who have abortions have a college education, and 44 percent are married or living with their partners.
Planned Parenthood puts the the cost of an abortion during the first trimester at between $300 to $950 -- a fee many women front out-of-pocket because of a lack of insurance coverage, confusion about whether the procedure is covered or a desire for privacy.

Randall O'Bannon, director of education and research for the National Right to Life Committee in Washington, says the abortion industry is profiting by performing more abortions on poor women.
"Women who have information and alternatives are choosing abortion less frequently than they did 10 or 15 years ago, but states are continuing to pay for the abortions of poor women. When the states are funding the abortions, they get these abortions," he says.
High rates were also seen for unmarried women who cohabit: 52 abortions per 1,000 . . .
The abortion rate among college graduates was substantially lower at 12.4 abortions per 1,000.

Christian Teacher Sues Brooklyn School
Anita Wooten-Francis, a special-education teacher in Canarsie, NY, claims the PS 224 principal George Andrews harassed her for being a devout Christian who privately read the Bible and prayed to God; he subsequently fired her.
-- From "Teach: I'm devout & kicked out" by Kathianne Boniello, New York Post 5/22/11
He'd "constantly" tease her that "he was aware that she and other Christians were praying to have the demons removed from his spirit, but that it was not working," according to a lawsuit she filed earlier this month in Brooklyn federal court.
In one instance, he criticized the disabled woman [Wooten-Francis] for using the elevator and told her to take the stairs. When she protested, he allegedly said, "Why don't you just pray?" Then he laughed.
At the same time, she says, the school was going to hell in a handbasket, with school administrators charging students for bake sales "even though no charity received the proceeds," and using money from the school's Special Needs Funds to pay for lunches and parties, the suit claims.
After she complained, Wooten-Francis said she was fired on trumped-up charges accusing her of grabbing a kindergartner.

Pro-life Trends Continue in American Opinion: Poll
As Gallup releases its annual abortion opinion poll, liberal media sources spin the statistics as pro-abortion propagandists.
A majority of Americans believe abortion is morally wrong; 39 percent say it's “morally acceptable.”
For background, read the linked series of previous polls
-- From "Gallup: 61 Percent Say All or Most Abortions Should Be Illegal" by Terence P. Jeffrey, CNSNews.com 5/23/11
Sixty-one percent of American adults—including some who describe themselves as “pro-choice”—told Gallup in a survey conducted May 5-8 that abortion should be illegal in all or most circumstances.
Forty-nine percent told Gallup they were pro-choice and 45 percent said they were pro-life, marking the first time since May 2008 that the percentage of Americans describing themselves to Gallup as pro-choice exceeded the percentage describing themselves as pro-life.
(Pro-life self-identification peaked in May 2009, when 51 percent told Gallup they were pro-life and 42 percent said they were pro-choice.)
In this year’s survey, in addition to the approximately 49 percent who said they were pro-choice and 45 percent who said they were pro-life, another approximately 7 percent would not describe themselves as either pro-choice or pro-life. This included 2 percent who said they had no opinion on the matter, 2 percent who said they did not know what the terms “pro-choice” and “pro-life” meant, and 3 percent who described themselves as mixed on the issue or neither one of the two.

From "Poll: For first time in three years, most Americans support abortion rights" by Lynda Waddington, Washington Independent 5/23/11
The number of Americans who self-identify as abortion rights advocates grew by 4 percent while the number identifying as anti-abortion rights advocates shrank by three percent, according to a new national poll. The new distribution marks the first time in about three years that most Americans believe a woman should have the right to choose.
Two-thirds of Republicans call themselves pro-life, while two-thirds of Democrats are pro-choice. Independents’ stance on abortion is closer to Democrats’ than Republicans’ stance, with 51 percent calling themselves “pro-choice” and 41 percent “pro-life.”
Political independents are evenly divided on the moral correctness of abortion, but they tilt fairly strongly toward restrictive abortion laws, with 60 percent saying abortion should be legal in a few or no circumstances.

Gallup said 50 percent of those polled said they think abortion should be legal under "certain circumstances" while 49 percent hold one of two other stances: 27 percent want abortion legal in all cases while 22 percent want it illegal in all cases.
The poll is based on telephone interviews conducted May 5-8 from a random sample of 1,018 adults, 18 or older, living in all 50 U.S. states and the District of Columbia. The margin of error is 4 percentage points.

From "Gallup Poll: Americans Want All or Most Abortions Illegal" by Steven Ertelt, LifeNews.com 5/23/11
In fact, Gallup polling shows that, since 1994, a majority of Americans have held a pro-life view wanting all or almost all abortions made illegal — and that pro-life view has strengthened with an average of 60 percent of Americans saying that over the years.
By age, Americans also oppose abortions — with 59 percent of people aged 18-34, 58 percent of those 35-54 and 64 percent of those over the age of 55 saying all or almost all abortions should become illegal. Younger Americans are most supportive of making all abortions illegal, with 24 percent of 18-34 year-olds saying so and 35 percent saying they want abortions legal only in a few circumstances.
The results make it clear that, despite their labeling of their own abortion views, a majority of Americans clearly not only oppose abortion and believe it to be a morally improper “choice,” but they believe the legal status of abortions should change and all or virtually all abortions should be prohibited. That is borne out by the results among the 18-34 group, with 51 percent saying they are pro-choice and 42 percent saying they are pro-life, the lowest percentage of any of the three age categories. However, 9 percent — almost 1 in 10 young adults — don’t know how to classify their abortion views, a mark that is twice as high as the other age categories.

Pastor Denounced for Prayer in Jesus' Name
Friday's session [in the Minnesota legislature] opened on a jarring note from the Rev. Bradlee Dean. He closed his prayer invoking Jesus Christ as the "head of the denomination ... as every president up until 2008 has acknowledged" -- implying President Barack Obama is not a Christian.

Dean denies being "anti-gay" but has said homosexuals should be imprisoned for sodomy.
As members erupted in outrage, a shaken [GOP House Speaker Kurt] Zellers went to the floor and promised: "That type of person will never, ever be allowed on the House floor again."
Dean was not sorry.
"I said a prayer. If a prayer starts a firestorm, so be it," he said.

Dean's prayer caused such an uproar that Republicans restarted the session and had the Rev. Grady St. Dennis, the House chaplain, give a new prayer. The official House journal lists St. Dennis as offering the Friday prayer.

Bradlee Dean with Old Path Church in Minneapolis violated the House Chamber's long-standing policy that the prayer be nondenominational. He also implied that President Obama is not a Christian.
“It's not about the Baptists. It's not about the Catholics alone or the Lutherans or the Wesleyians or the Presbyterians, evangelicals or any other denomination but rather the head of the denomination and his name is Jesus as every president up until 2008 has acknowledged," he said.

Liberal 'christians' Praise Allah June 26th
Christian clergy at churches across the country will host readings from the Qur’an and other sacred religious texts as they welcome their Muslim and Jewish colleagues on Sunday, June 26, 2011 for Faith Shared: Uniting in Prayer and Understanding.
UPDATE 6/2/11: Priest says it's a “good thing for the church” to publicly recognize the existence of Islam.
-- From "Clergy plan Qur’an readings to combat anti-Muslim bigotry" by Jeff Kunerth, Orlando Sentinel 5/17/11
Faith Shared is a project of Interfaith Alliance and Human Rights First, which seeks to send a message both here at home and to the Arab and Muslim world about our respect for Islam. The National Cathedral in Washington, DC, along with 50 churches in 26 states have committed to participating in this effort.
[Interfaith Alliance President Rev. Dr. C. Welton Gaddy said,] “Appreciation for pluralism and respect for religious freedom and other human rights are at the core of our democracy.”

[National Cathedral Dean Sam Lloyd said,] “As Americans and people of faith, we must use our great traditions to come together for mutual enrichment and understanding.”
By coming together to read from and hear each other’s sacred texts, organizers believe Christian, Jewish and Muslim clergy will model respect and cooperation in ways that create concrete opportunities to build and strengthen working ties between their faiths.

While he enters the Republican presidential race as a long shot with low name recognition and little money, he has some underappreciated assets, and the field remains largely undefined. Here are five reasons why you shouldn’t count him out (and a couple reasons why you might be able to).
1. He has a compelling life story. . . .
2. Once people get to know him, they love him. . . .
3. He is not a flip-flopper. . . .
4. He has ties with the tea party movement and Evangelicals. . . .
5. He’s a true outsider. . . .

I graduated from Morehouse College with a degree in mathematics in 1967. Back then, we didn’t use fancy calculators to solve problems. Instead, we utilized formulas to “solve for x.”
The same holds true in life. Throughout my own, “solving for x” meant learning how to nurture a family, how to navigate the corporate world during unfavorable times and how to deliver results. In delivering these results, I have always maintained a sense of humanity while achieving bottom lines and profitability. It stems from my humble beginnings, upbringing and spiritual compass.
I grew up in a three-room house during the height of segregation. My father worked three jobs-- as a barber, janitor and chauffer—and my mother was a domestic worker. They toiled tirelessly to provide for my brother and me in hopes of giving us a better life than what they ever knew. And they did.

While he enters the Republican presidential race as a long shot with low name recognition and little money, he has some underappreciated assets, and the field remains largely undefined. Here are five reasons why you shouldn’t count him out (and a couple reasons why you might be able to).
1. He has a compelling life story. . . .
2. Once people get to know him, they love him. . . .
3. He is not a flip-flopper. . . .
4. He has ties with the tea party movement and Evangelicals. . . .
5. He’s a true outsider. . . .

From "The Case for Herman Cain for President -- Solving for X" by Herman Cain, FoxNews.com 5/21/11

As the same-sex “marriage” battle heats up again in New York, one writer at a prominent gay news source is questioning why his lobby refuses to admit that the gay agenda involves “indoctrinating” schoolchildren to accept homosexuality.
Queerty contributor Daniel Villarreal criticized the homosexual movement’s knee-jerk reaction against accusations of meddling in public schools. Villarreal pointed to a recent National Organization for Marriage (NOM) ad launched in New York that points out how homosexual indoctrination has been introduced in Massachusetts and California schools.

Fewer Get Married, but Stay Married: Census
A new U.S. Census report shows that fewer Americans are getting married, or choosing to do so later in life, and so the divorce rate is on the decline.

UPDATE 8/25/11: More marry/divorce in south, fewer in northeast, says census
-- From "U.S. marriages last longer, fewer divorces" posted at UPI 5/19/11
Although 30 percent of U.S. adults have never been married, those who are married are staying together longer than couples used to, census officials say.
The U.S. Census report -- using 2008 data of men and women age 15 and older in about 39,000 households -- indicates 55 percent of currently married couples had been married for at least 15 years, while 35 percent had reached their 25th anniversary and 6 percent passed their 50th wedding anniversary.
Seventy-two percent of both spouses in recorded marriages were in their first marriage; 6 percent of marriages included a wife in her second marriage and husband in his first; 8 percent a husband in his second marriage and wife in her first; and 8 percent had both spouses in their second marriage, the report says. One percent of the married couple consisted of a husband and wife who had both been married three or more times.

From "Number of long-lasting marriages in U.S. has risen, Census Bureau reports" by Carol Morello, Washington Post 5/18/11
Americans may be postponing marriage, and fewer are wedding at all. But what about the people who do get married? They’re staying together longer than they have in years.
One reason for the increase, said demographers and sociologists who study families, is that people are marrying later in life, after they have completed their education. Not only are they more mature, but they also are more financially secure.
Nearly a third of adults never marry at all. That number has marched upward in every age group over the past decade and a half.
In 1986, one in four people ages 25 to 29 had never married. In 2009, that was true of almost half in that age group. The number of adults 50 to 54 who have never married also jumped during the same time period to one in 10.

From "American Couples Get ‘More Selective’" by Frank Bass, Bloomberg 5/18/11
The New Milford, Connecticut-based group’s 4,000 wedding planners are seeing fewer brides in their late 20s, Davey said in a telephone interview. Couples are waiting longer to get married because they’re living together first, she said, and often must save money to pay for their wedding.
About 27 percent of women from 30 to 34 reported never having been married in 2009, almost doubling the 14 percent who hadn’t been married in 1986. The percentage of women older than 55 who had never married rose to 5.8 from 4.8 percent in that period.
The median age at first marriage in 1950 was 23 for men and 20 for women. It’s now 28 for men and 26 for women, the Census Bureau said.

From "Americans Still Choosing Marriage, Census Figures Show" by Alison Matheson, Christian Post Correspondent 5/20/11
And although the figures show that people are marrying later in life, more marriages are lasting, with 75 percent of those marrying since 1990 making it to their 10th anniversary – around three percent higher than in the early 1980s when the nation saw its highest divorce rates.
These percentages are around one to two percentage points higher than they were in 1996, reflecting the leveling of divorce rates and increases in life expectancy.
While 18.8 percent of 25- to 29-year-olds who had been married were divorced in 1996, the percentage dropped to 13.8 percent in 2009. For 30- to 34-year-old women, the rate of divorce dropped from 25.6 to 21.3 percent. The divorce rate among older women (50 years and over), however, increased. Overall, 21 percent of men and 22 percent of women had ever been divorced.
