According to a new study in the Journal of Epidemiology and Community Health, parents live in better physical health, resulting in longer life, compared to childless people. The rate of dying early for mothers was found to be as much as one-quarter that of childless women.

A study involving Danish couples found a correlation between childless couples dying earlier than couples with children, researchers said.
. . . the early death rate from circulatory disease, cancers and accidents among childless women was four times as high as that among those who gave birth to their own child, and 50 percent lower among women who adopted. The study also found the early death rate in men was halved if they had children.
"Mindful that association is not the same thing as causation, our results suggest that the mortality rates are higher in the childless," the researchers wrote in the study.

. . . After examining data on more than 21,276 Danish couples who tried to get pregnant, researchers calculated that women who gave birth to a child were four times more likely to be alive at the end of the study period compared with women who remained childless. The benefit to men was smaller but still significant — those who fathered children were twice as likely to be alive compared with men who remained childless.
The couples in the study all sought treatment for infertility; some of those who didn’t get pregnant using in vitro fertilization went on to adopt children. These parents also seemed to get a health boost — the mothers in this group were 33% less likely to die compared with women who never had children, and the adoptive fathers were 45% less likely to die.

"Childless couples are at increased risk of dying early of all causes," says researcher Esben Agerbo, associate professor at Aarhus University in Aarhus, Denmark.
Rates of mental ill health were similar between couples with and without children of their own, with the exception of those with drug and alcohol problems. However, the prevalence of mental illness in couples who adopted children was around half that of other parents.
The new findings echo those of Dr Michael Eisenberg, director of male reproductive medicine and surgery at Stanford University in the US.
